Ah, thanks, Molly! I was just going by the size difference in the two turtles......the smaller one may well not be a baby any more, but a juvie (adolescent) who is still with his mother? I don't know that much about the life of turtles! I have seen one the size of that larger one around here for some time, including last summer, so yes, that one is definitely older.

I'd love to see some baby turtles around here but so far that hasn't happened! I do remember seeing them during summers spent at my grandparents' summer cottage on a lake in Pennsylvania, but that was many, many years ago.

I don't think turtles stay with their mothers at all. Sea turtles in particular leave as soon as they lay their eggs, and I think it is similar for other varieties of turtles to do the same.

Yes, I just looked in good ole Google and now I'm thinking that perhaps that what I saw were a male and a female turtle -- probably "slider turtles" or "Pond turtles," either of which would be most likely to live in our little lake. From what I l gleaned in my quick reading, juvenile turtles grow to near-adult size fairly quickly so chances are that the smaller one isn't a juvie after all. Fun to see them together yesterday!
