Could be a young muskrat. This is kind of a strange pic to share. I noticed this critter on a step of a ladder on our pool. Looked waterlogged and was also shivering in a way that made me think it was terrified. I moved it out of the pool and onto dry land.
But I took several pics before the move and on review I don't have a clue what this critter is.
Clearly a mammal. And I suspect a rodent. Ears aren't large and obvious (though could be hiding in all the fur around the face). Rat? Mouse? Shrew? Mole? Something else?
It survived the transfer out of the pool, but was still shaking when I put it down on the ground. No clue if it ultimately escaped to safety or became a meal for our resident corvids.
For reference, the step is 3 inches wide to give a sense of scale.
Curious as to people's thoughts on what this little critter might be. I live in Rhode Island in case that helps narrow things down.
Mea culpa for breaking the rules and posting 2 images. Won't happen again, I double pinkie swear .
Love to see these guys flying about a foot over the water and boy can they do some formation flying.

Edit: I can never figure out how to properly upload an image...
The easy way...don't use a 3rd party hosting link. Upload directly from the original source file on the computer. When posting, 3 choices "Post Reply", "Upload a file" and "More Options." Choose "upload a file", locate on computer or phone, when uploaded choose 'full image' rather than default 'thumbnail', then post reply. NOTE: may need to make a downsized original to upload as my 6500 pixel originals are way to big, and will typically make a 2500 pixel version to upload.La Jolla sunset

I went to the Flickr link of the photo and chose to share it from there in BB Code. The easy way...don't use a 3rd party hosting link. Upload directly from the original source file on the computer. "More Options" is a bit misleading as it is simply a screen to input HTML language, making it quite complex. Looking at the source data, suspect that is what @Hughmac used, inserting language to display. It is rare that I use "More Options" and for far simpler work rearranging the content.

Very good. Excellent use of bold lines and shadow. One of three decent images from my most recently developed rolls of film. This will eventually be paired up with another image in my abstract diptych project.
Nice B&W conversion.

I export a web sized file to my hard drive, then just drag it into the text box. Click full image, then post.
