Welcome to Photo of the Day. The POTD thread was started by iGary in May, 2006 and converted to a monthly thread in November 2007 by Arn. POTD is one of the most popular picture groups on MacRumors, often exceeding 500 posts and 20,000 views per month.

Photo of the Day is intended to be a showcase for your best pictures. There is no limit to your gear, just your imagination. P&S and film cameras are welcome along with DSLRs. There are no themes like the Weekly Contest, and no winners (or losers) either.

Policies

*One Photo per Day - Don't post more than one photo each day.

*Multi-Quote - To comment on several photos, click the "+ (Multi-Quote) button. This puts all your comments in one post. Multi-Quoting is required on all of the MacRumors forums.

*SFW (Safe for Work) only - This is a site - wide rule. If you wouldn't show it in a public place, then it's NSFW (not safe for work). Think before you post.

*Describe your photo - Tell what it is and where you took it. If you know the EXIF data of a photo, include it. The following EXIF fields are recommended: Camera, ISO, Focal Length, Shutter/Aperture and Lens.

Note: Anyone may start the Photo of the Day thread on the first of the month GMT. Please copy a quote of this post to maintain all the formatting.

** To see all of our past POTD threads (up to July 2013) please see the sticky thread here**
** To see all of the POTD threads from August 2013 onwards see the thread here**

Cheers :)

Sinclair inspecting the cat houses we have on the back porch for signs of the stray cats that come by.

"Andy, there have been strays around here, up to no good. You gotta give me bullets for my gun!"
"Now Barney Sinclair, we have talked about how having bullets in your gun just leads to trouble."

Wild Rose And Wind Belt
The other shot I got when the young Blue Heron let me drift in close. Just as he got ready to fly my kayak began to swing to the right, I had to twist my torso to the left thereby accelerating the swing. Managed only the one frame. Result was this accidental pan. Helped along with more than a bit of post image magic. Not sure if the 1/90sec shutter speed helped or hurt the final image, it is what it is. Fuji XP-90 waterproof camera.

Yesterday I saw something unusual at our lake. I was out on the deck shooting Alfred when I noticed this large bird flying around and I could tell it was a raptor by the wings, the rapidity with which he was moving, the feet, the beak and general head shape. I started trying to get some shots hoping to be able to identify him. He was soaring around and above the lake. I paused to just watch him for a moment and suddenly he plunged straight down right to the water's surface, then rose again. I thought, "he just got a fish! That definitely isn't an eagle, that has to be an Osprey!" Later on when I was reviewing my images in the computer I saw that indeed he was an Osprey. Odd to have one around here, as usually they hang out down by the Potomac River and near the marinas and the wetlands. Guess he was just passing by and decided to grab a treat.....

Most of my BIF images didn't come out very well but this one at least gives an idea. He has a fish clutched in his talons but it's hard to tell that from the angle of this shot.

I wish I could've gotten a better shot, but he was moving so quickly that it was hard to acquire and keep focus on him -- I was lucky I captured anything, really! I shot this with the Sony RX10 M4 -- probably could have done better if I'd had the A1 or an A9 and the lens on the Wimberley, but I used what I had in my hands at the time and really, it's surprising how well the RX10 performs, even with that small sensor. It all happened so quickly that I wouldn't have had time to run into the house, grab the tripod, throw the 200-600mm on the A7R IV camera and hustle it out to the deck. By that time the Osprey would've long since flown off! It really was unusual to see one here. I've seen them closer to the river, at marinas and such, but we're a bit far removed from that.

Yes it is June and the two squirrels by my house were in combat over territory, jumping from roof to roof, chasing each other all over. When they jump from my neighbor's tree they land on my aluminum roof over my front porch, really noisy. The fat raccoon and a skunk were by the last couple of nights trying to steal the cats food, fortunately he just sits there and watches them, occasionally growling a little.
