it could be a liatris but it seems too tall for that.
Just had a look and I can see why you're thinking this -- the green part does look very similar, doesn't it? Apparently flowers don't appear for a while yet, so if we suddenly get blossoms mid-to-late summer we'll know! The fact that the green part of the plant is so tall already and just keeps growing and growing is a bit confusing, though......

I should have clarified in my earlier posts that these things are in front of the building next to mine, not my building, and until these started sprouting up and taking over, the landscaping at this building has been just lovely. A former owner/resident, a true gardener at heart, spent quite a bit of time way back several years ago adding to the basic landscaping that had been provided. She would be so upset at seeing how these things have been steadily encroaching upon her lovely landscaping and thoughtful selection of plants and flowers!

Wow, Molly, I think you may have found the answer!!!! The "leaves and bolting phase" sure does look like what we've got growing out there in front of that building! Certainly the things are reaching up to the sky and I won't be surprised if some of them DO reach six feet, too.

Thank you! Off to do more research now....

I watched a video and read more descriptions and then went back to examine the plants again and I do think that this is indeed Horseweed. Matches the criteria of growing very tall, has hairlike thingies along the stem, has lance-shaped leaves, smells a little like carrots when you mush a leaf, etc., etc. We got us a big old invasion of Horseweed in front of that building! Yikes! Our landscaping people obviously haven't been paying attention or perhaps they are not familiar with this weed.

Thanks so much, Molly! I'm about to send off an email to the condo management company with a couple of photos and recommend that they contact the landscape company to get those things out of there before they take over any more than they already have.....

I don't know many plants, but my first major in college was Horticulture (it didn't stick), and I have an odd fascination with trying to identify them.

My guy goes for plastic bags all the time, he loves the red tie handles on garbage bags. He will chew any plastic bag he finds.

Two of my Three seem to idolise *licking* teh plastique . . . one of Our most-eerie nighttime sounds ;)
