Yesterday I saw something unusual at our lake. I was out on the deck shooting Alfred when I noticed this large bird flying around and I could tell it was a raptor by the wings, the rapidity with which he was moving, the feet, the beak and general head shape. I started trying to get some shots hoping to be able to identify him. He was soaring around and above the lake. I paused to just watch him for a moment and suddenly he plunged straight down right to the water's surface, then rose again. I thought, "he just got a fish! That definitely isn't an eagle, that has to be an Osprey!" Later on when I was reviewing my images in the computer I saw that indeed he was an Osprey. Odd to have one around here, as usually they hang out down by the Potomac River and near the marinas and the wetlands. Guess he was just passing by and decided to grab a treat.....

Most of my BIF images didn't come very well but this one at least gives an idea. He has a fish clutched in his talons but it's hard to tell that from the angle of this shot.

Nice. We've been monitoring a nesting pair of Osprey's. They have taken up residence at one of local soccer fields with a huge nest on top of the lighting poles. Believe they have 2 juveniles as we see mom and dad and an additional two heads pop up. They have an interesting kind of sharp cry. Can't wait to see the little ones fly. Wondering if anyone knows if these guys/gals mate for life and do they return to their nests or build new ones?
