That’s perfect timing. Well done.Catch of the day! This cormorant is doing what many long-time water bird photographers call "the Reznick Flip," when the bird flips his newly-caught fish in mid-air in order to position it properly to land in the mouth for a trip down the gullet. Herons, Egrets, Cormorants and others are known for this behavior and it's fascinating to watch. I really lucked out with this shot!
The cormorant was in the middle of the lake, not far from me and pretty much right out in front of my deck. I had a happy time watching and photographing as he and his prey engaged in an epic battle (which eventually the cormorant won). Shot with Sony A1 and the 200-600mm lens plus 1.4x TC. In editing I also used Gigapixel to upscale by 2x in order to have plenty of latitude to crop in pretty closely, to really showcase the subject.

Thank you! Yes, I was ecstatic when I reviewed my images in the computer and saw that I'd definitely nailed that shot! The cormorant did the "Reznick Flip"three or four times but this image was the best of them. (The term "Reznick Flip" was coined years ago by longtime wildlife and water bird photographer Ron Reznick; other photographers have been using it ever since.) I have a bunch of images now to edit but knew the minute I saw it that the shot I posted here was my personal "catch of the day" and immediately processed it.That’s perfect timing. Well done.
The fish seems to have a "aw crap" look on his face, too.Catch of the day!
