Thanks for the kind words, AFB. A bit of luck involved with the "pose" (which I found rather amusing) and having his head turned enough to bring out the iridescence in the gorget feathers.

Lovely shot of the magnolia again today!
Well magnolias are stationary so easy prey!
Plus only a few days later and much of the plant looks past its best.

This is exactly the kind of shot I aspire to create, turning an everyday scene like this into something with so much mood depth and texture. Would love to know lens and settings you used. Still getting my head around ISO shutter speeds and F stops. Stunning photo Scotsman!!
Thanks OzBok. Sorry for the delay in replying - been travelling this week for work. Taken with the Canon 16-35mm lens at 24mm on a 6D (full-frame) body. Shutter speed was 1/80th sec at f8.0 ISO 200. The thinking behind the shot was to use a relatively narrow (high number) f-stop to get good front-to-back focus (f8-f11 is ideal for this sort of short focal-length lens). Then adjust the ISO to get the desired shutter speed - in this case fast enough to capture the waves breaking but still slow enough to give a sense of motion. The rest is down to the weather and taking a few repeat shots to get the waves at the right time. Hope this helps.

Here's one from about 10 minutes later...in the middle of a hail storm. Comments always appreciated.

Another beauty. You should teach bird in flight capture!

Cheers, AFB. I'll defer to Cheese&Apple on teaching that one! I will say that it involves observation, anticipation, and persistence (much like any other genre of photography). I'm happy to share my thoughts/approach as to the hummingbirds though.

We mostly get sparrows in our garden. They have had feeders for years, but the minute I open the door, they are off. Naturally skittish birds. Can't possibly see them taking to a speed light.
Are hummingbirds quite tame then?
