This is one of the first photos with my camera when I was experimenting with the fast shutter speed.

Nice one, i tried this type of thing today, and the following was the best i came up with. I had tried something similar to what you did, but NONE of those turned out.

Not quite in focus, probably too steep an angle? Any tips on this type of photography appreciated.

The best way to get a correct focus in the kind of photo you took is to use a tripod and focus manually, that way the camera won't need to "hunt" for the correct focus and you would only need to worry about pressing the shutter in time.

As for my photo, what I did is use a relatively fast shutter speed (1/60), a normal aperture, and with the flash out. It was during night, so making the background go completely black was easier. When shooting during day and wanting to make the background go black you need a fast shutter speed, a very narrow aperture and the use of a flash.

Your photo is great. If you improve the sharpness and the contrast you could make a beautiful photo out of it.:)

I've become the track photographer for the Drag Strip up near Salt Lake (Rocky Mountain) and last night was the season opener for the Street Legal Drags. This is the burn-out for a 9.5 second civic... very fast.

Thanks Steame! How did you get the lower third so blue?

James, care to explain the lighting on that one, very cool!

Hector, good catch!

Another cool shot there Eric!

iBallz, I'm not entirely sure how I did it
I took the shot using a polariser & an ND grad filter with a fairly long exposure, the only post processing done on the file was a boost in saturation, the blue on the water was there from the original shot though.

Thank you TommyD, for your kind comment. That pier is loaded with barnacles, any collisions are not a pretty sight! Doesn't stop the surfers from shooting it all day long...

Today's image is from the old central Florida habitat, before developers took their toll it was all like this, even Disney World! The squirrel's hide-away caught my attention in the morning sun.

So I went to the zoo lately with my friends and I was bragging about my D80 and the 18-200 lens :D and the guys were impressed, but when we got there i was shocked to see many pro photographers with tons of equipment taking pictures of various animals, they had their large white Canon lenses that made mine look like a toy ...never thought the zoo would be an attraction to serious photographers...

Anyways here is my contribution:

Wow is that a grizzly bear? Nice.
The zoo is great practice for wild animal shots - I'm just always sure to specify the shot as a 'captive animal' if showing them because those photographers who actually spend time out in the wild hunting and stalking their subjects in harsh conditions really deserve great recognition for a hard earned photograph! ;)
