When my wife and I first moved here to NC in 2/2001, we first lived in Apex, NC. I could see the cooling tower from our house of the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant. It intrigued me, as I had never seen a nuclear power plant before, let alone lived within 5 miles of one. Well my curiosity finally got the best of me, so my wife and I got in the car to go see if we could get a closer look at this cooling tower. We drove to the entrance and there were no keep out signs, so we drove down the long and winding road and kept getting closer and closer. I was so surprised that I kept stopping the car to take pictures to show our proximity to the cooling tower. We finally were there, and what an ominous feeling to be able to walk right up to the tower and nobody ask us what the @#$% we are doing. Well, I walked all over the grounds and right up to the tower. Never saw another person, let alone police or military. Of course that has all changed since 9/11. There is a guarded entrance now, and you can't get anywhere close to the tower any more.

The pictures were taken the Summer of 2001 just a couple months before 9/11 and are scanned, as they were taken when all my cameras were still film. I included a thumbnail of the pictures to show my progress as we got closer to the cooling tower, and to show they are my pictures.

What a cool story. Impressive, definitely got lucky and it’s a rare shot! Glad you took the risk and got very close to the nuclear plant. I’m pretty sure something like this you can’t do anymore.

Thank you for sharing 🙇🏻‍♀️

First time I seen a Red-shouldered Hawk perched on a wire. ?
Back before we carried cameras in our pockets, I was driving east along the NYS Thruway through the Montezuma Nature Reserve. There was a simple wire fence with wooden fence posts. Perched on top of each post was a hawk, facing the opposite way of the hawks on either side of him. There was at least a dozen hawks in a row, each facing the opposite way that day. Wish I could have gotten a picture of that!

At the same time I was repeatedly told that nuclear power is ever so safe.
