I remember catching one in the act and being horrified with how long their tongues were. Like Really L-O-N-G!!!
Thank you! That's Alfred, the resident Great Blue Heron. He thoughtfully made a stop in a weeded area at the lake's edge, right straight across from me: a perfect photo op. I just happened to spot him out the kitchen window and of course immediately stopped what I was doing and grabbed the camera to run out to the deck for a shooting session. Alfred was most obliging as I fired away at him. In this shot he has a small fish in his mouth and was taking a few sips of water before swallowing it.
Camera was Sony A1, with 200-600mm ("the Bazooka") with 1.4x teleconverter.
Rather tiny flowers. I was hand holding a +4 close-up lens and the camera. Let the auto focus just do its thing.

A trail I've never tread. I call it "The Pine Tree Trail". I have passed by it many times while walking on the White Oak greenway in Cary, NC but have not yet explored it.
