Living in SW Montana, I find winter is definitely the best time to visit Yellowstone. Yes, there are way less people. Not all of the roads are open. You may need a snowcoach or snowmobile to get to some of the places. But the serenity and the scenery of snow against the hot springs and wildlife can be breath-taking!For those summer Yellowstone visitors fighting the crowds - this is what the viewing area at Old Faithful looks like in January. I counted about a dozen people in total. And this was the biggest crowd we ran into in this area - out at the pools and walkways, our small group was alone.
