Beautiful. The Wildarena people I shot with last week do a bear hunt trip to finland. I'm tempted, but its expensive for a hobbies like me.

Plus you'd need to add insurance and I'd probably want to hire a 500 or 600 prime.
Thanks AFB. :)

Wildarena looks good and their bear trip is interesting. Interesting that the approach to bears and the bears themselves can be quite different. With Wildarena in Finland, they work from hides as they say the bears are shy. In Alaska, the approach is the opposite - you want the bears to know you're around so there are no surprises. Once you settle in at a spot to photograph, the bears will be aware of your presence but they're definitely not concerned or intimidated at all.

One morning we set-up and got low on our knees about 2 metres from the edge of a river to photograph a female bear and her two cubs in the river. Mom left the river and headed away from us but then turned around and walked back towards us. She passed between us and the river's edge with her cubs following. They weren't more than a metre from us as they walked by. A heart stopping but very cool moment I'll always remember.

Wow that sounds cool. I’m sure that was a hold your breath moment!

Spring (first year) brown bear cub.

Went back to Alaska in August and spent 10 days camping in Katmai National Park to photograph their Coastal Brown Bears. This trip was timed to catch the bears fishing for salmon as they load up on fat and protein in preparation for the long winter hibernation.

Awesome, I can't wait to hit up Alaska. Tell me, how scary is it to be close to the bears?

Man, that sounds like a fun trip, but the price shocked me as well!

Thanks AFB. :)

And they say you need a long lens for wildlife ;) I would have needed a change of underwear for sure after that...

Not so much scary. Let’s just say that the bears weren’t intimidated by me but there were definitely times when I was intimidated by the bears.

The trick was to have an excellent guide who had a lot of experience with brown bears and camping in the wilds of Alaska, and we did. Our guide was very calm and relaxed and we took our lead from him. The other benefit was that he looked after everything...provided all the camp equipment, set-up, meals, fresh water, etc.

Here we are getting ready to load our gear into the float plane for the flight from Kodiak Alaska into Katmai National Park.

Two deHavilland products on one page of the POTD thread!

Nice photos too.

Dash 8 would be a Q400 - six blade propellers give it away.

Cheers

A two-fer because I forgot a POTD during my absence. I kept up and didn't actually miss any days, but the photos I took were not social-media photos, they were family photos. So I had to "make up" photos after and missed the numbering a bit. Now I'm all square. :)

Not using this one for the current weekly photo on the theme 'death' as there is too much of an explanation to it. Don't usually take my camera into the mens room but when I saw this wall, had to return. While is not unusual for people to be buried in a church/cathedral, this was a former church now coffeshop/restaurant in Cambridge, UK. Wasn't expecting this.

OOPS...Move it over to November, mainly because tomorrows will be in the same area. View attachment 800284

Montreux, CH

One of the many "official" signs during the Jazz Festival referencing the Moody Blues song about the fire destroying the Montreux casino. Overlooks Lac Leman (Lake Geneva).

That would be the Deep Purple song ...

Definitely a Dash of some sorts but I’m certainly no planespotter

A De Havilland Q400, which is a stretched Dash 8.

Last plane one. Not a De Havilland this time. Comments always appreciated.

Ok Scottsman I'll bite ... nice vantage point, great shots: let me guess Manchester, Gatwick, Glasgow, East Midlands?

Manchester Ian. You can tell that from the extensive grey weather....A good spot on a public path that passes the end of one of the runways. This was with my 70-300mm lens at 300mm handheld.
