The area these bees were in was cordoned off by the park rangers to protect them and us. I got about 20 feet from them and had my 300mm lens on. These bees aren't aggressive unless they get agitated.
I love taking walks around dawn in my neighborhood. Denver sits at the intersection of high plains (not many dense stands of trees) and mountains and at sunrise, we get strong shafts of sun on objects well before the main areas are out of shadow. This is intentionally underexposed and converted to b&w, really to "take a picture of the sun light."
Speaking of swarms, try showing up to a park with a pond and a handful of bread heels.
As long as you're smooth and gentle you could stick your hand straight in with them. Bees are awesome. One of these days we'll get another packet and try raising them again.
....And under the surface of the water he goes! (Alas, when he came back up again, no fish in his mouth.)
