Welcome to Photo of the Day. The POTD thread was started by iGary in May, 2006 and converted to a monthly thread in November 2007 by Arn. POTD is one of the most popular picture groups on MacRumors, often exceeding 500 posts and 20,000 views per month.

Photo of the Day is intended to be a showcase for your best pictures. There is no limit to your gear, just your imagination. P&S and film cameras are welcome along with DSLRs. There are no themes like the Weekly Contest, and no winners (or losers) either.

Policies

*One Photo per Day - Don't post more than one photo each day.

*Multi-Quote - To comment on several photos, click the "+ (Multi-Quote) button. This puts all your comments in one post. Multi-Quoting is required on all of the MacRumors forums.

*SFW (Safe for Work) only - This is a site - wide rule. If you wouldn't show it in a public place, then it's NSFW (not safe for work). Think before you post.

*Describe your photo - Tell what it is and where you took it. If you know the EXIF data of a photo, include it. The following EXIF fields are recommended: Camera, ISO, Focal Length, Shutter/Aperture and Lens.

Note: Anyone may start the Photo of the Day thread on the first of the month GMT. Please copy a quote of this post to maintain all the formatting.

Gorgeous one Kenoh (the photo of course).

Probably a few dead horses Fanboy:)...might clone them out as you suggest.

Thank you kindly, but no no, I know you meant me not the photo! :)

It was a beautiful foggy morning and the sun was just dulled enough to be in stunning relief (is that the right word to use here?)...

the moon.....I'm very much an amateur i envy some of the shots I've seen in these threads

Join the club friend! I envy most of the people here too... the rest I pity for putting up with my duff photos! :)

We are mostly all amateurs... some more than others... we enjoy the journey and we try to be helpful... There are some pros on here but lets call them amateurs too just for laughs... :)

Nice image. The thing is, you will struggle to get much better without spending serious cash on a long lens or a telescope so try and be satisfied on this one or it will drive you insane! also try stacking focus to bring out more detail and take images when it is not a full moon to get some contrast... otherwise full moons are really hard to get anything other than a flat looking disk. IMHO but I am an amateur too.

what's stacking focus?

Take 10-20 photos of the same thing in the same position while tweaking the focus ring slightly in each one, then use something like regstax to stack them into one image to give you more detail. It works quite well...

Actually, focus stacking would not help here. The moon is so bright and far away that you can take one image at f/11 and have it be in focus from front to back. The term he was trying to suggest was exposure stacking, which is done by taking the highest resolution video possible with your camera and running it through a program to select the individual frames with the least atmospheric distortion. This makes a huge difference.

Hmm, no thats a slightly different technique than I was suggesting.

The reason I was suggesting it is because I know I struggle to find the exact focus and by doing this it helps counteract my clumsiness and gets me a sharper image. For the times when autofocus fails to nail it. It works for me and I have had some nice shots as a result that were never quite there as single exposures. Even at f/11 because even though the focal plane is so deep, the point at which optimal focus is believed to be there by the camera can be improved upon and I am talking high end Canon gear here not point and shoots. Experience has told me that while the video technique is good, so are stacked stills.

I was formerly obssessed by moon shots and I like the idea of deep space images but cant justify buying a motorised mount or 8" telescope to satisfy my wants - just nit that into it I suppose.

:)
