Oooo... Amazon Echo what does it do and what do you think?

I love it. I already had the Echo for my bedroom so bought a couple of Dots for the kitchen and living room.

I've got some Philips Hue lights that I can control with the Echo, which is very Star Trek. I also use it to listen to the radio, podcasts, Spotify tunes, answer questions, tell me facts, tell me jokes, set alarms and timers. They're really nifty bits of kit and make me feel like I'm living in the future. My mum thought it was witchcraft when I demoed it to her a few weeks back.

The Dots only have little speakers like in a mobile phone so I wanted to connect it up to an always on Bluetooth one for tunes. This one is a TaoTronics speaker and it sounds awesome for only £42. Surprising amount of bass for such a tiny speaker.

Personally I've got two lights in the living room - one as a main light and one behind the TV for ambience. They are set up to come on every night at 5.30pm so that the dog has some light and it's bright for when we get home. I can dim them and turn them off and on by telling the Echo to do so. I've also set up some routines using the Yonomi app so I can say "turn movie time on" and it'll change them to a certain colour and brightness.

In the bedroom I've got two bedside lamps with Hue bulbs and they come on at 9pm at a certain brightness and colour (we tend to watch films upstairs on the bed at night due to our decrepit backs). They also come on in the morning when the alarm goes off and slowly increase in brightness over five minutes to full power to wake us up gently.

Using the Yonomi app I've set up loads of colour profiles so that I can change the bulbs to different colours by saying things like "turn orange on" as Echo doesn't support that natively yet.

You can also control the lights remotely using the native app so you can make it appear like someone is home. It's a really good setup and feels very Star Trekesque to come home and tell your lights to turn on. Geek heaven :) Only downside is they are fifty quid a bulb, but they are rated for 20 odd thousand hours apparently as they are LEDs.

Yes you can order stuff from Amazon on the Echo. Haven't tried it personally.

What the hell is it?

The Mothership is a prop used by George Clinton and his P-Funk crew during live performances. It would descend to the stage where then Starchild would emerge to combat Sir Nose D'voidoffunk and eventually make him dance. Seeing it up close recently certainly brought back fond memories of the shows and music (and the smell of marijuana). Anyway, I hope this helps! :)
