CONEY ISLAND PARACHUTE JUMP
 
Yesterday I watched with fascination as Alfred spent some time exercising his tongue, and to my surprise I could see more than just the thin front segment of it; I now saw the rear part, which is really a rather complex muscular structure unique to the Great Blue Heron (not sure about other herons) because they not only eat fish but also insects and the occasional small bird as well. I'd always wondered how on earth with that narrow beak he could so adeptly turn a good-sized fish around in his mouth and then swallow it whole. Quite the remarkable and useful tool, that tongue.....
