I searched and didn't find any existing threads like this.

So I bought some interesting beer I saw at the LCBO today. I pretty much saw it and had to buy it.

I live simply. And refuse to pay extra for "prestige".

So far I am seeing percentages all the way from 5% to 14%. I would try it. How did you like the taste? I would rather a beer taste good then be strong with no taste at all.

If you have ever had Avery Mephistopheles you will know what I am talking about. The beer was super strong but tasted horrible IMHO. The alcohol was over the top and ruined it for me.

I also think that the main reason that you drink beer in the first place, is the TASTE. To me the constant upping of the alcohol percentages is just a marketing ploy. :)

Couldn't agree more. There seems to be a race going on with the micro brews to see how much ABV they can stuff into their beers. I don't mind a little kick here or there but once you put so much in and the taste is severely impacted it ruins the beer drinking experience for me!

That was my problem with it. I love stouts and porters (my favorite style), but that one was way over the top for me. And it doesn't have to taste nasty. Brooklyn Brewery makes one called Black Chocolate Stout that is around 10% and I actually liked it. A similar thing is happening with hop levels. Every microbrewery seems to be trying to one-up others by releasing these insanely hoppy beers.

Look, if you want a high percentage beer just to get drunk, a fine malt liquor beverage will get the job done and will be a lot cheaper than these craft brews with insane alcohol levels.

Finally I have arrived.....
Yebis Beer in an Okinawan glassware

I am cutting back on beer as I feel bloated after drinking it. But, when I drink, here is one of my choices.

Sierra Nevada Kellerweis is really good. Nothing too complex, but very refreshing. I'll be keeping a steady supply from now on I think. I'll take it any day over the Franziskaner as I recall it.

Need to try the Oatmeal Stout. My roommate says its really good also.
