my rigs

1989 miyata 914, made in japan. originally it came equipped with shimano 105 but after a partial frame restoration a couple of years back i upgraded it with shimano 600 throughout. with biopace chainrings, of course.

it's pictured in commuter guise with continental gp tyres on arayas. in the weekends i ride it with tubulars on wolber aubisque. and a better seat.

i use a '97 kona lava dome for journeys in the wild. here's an old pic.

when strong head winds make me consider taking the car to work i instead pick my merida e-spresso electric with bosch 250w motor. cheating, i know :)

I have a friend with a bike with huge tires like that.. I think his may be a bit bigger than those. Anyway.. every time we go riding together people stare at him.

Then there's me with my Trek like.. hey.

Haha, I definitely get a lot of looks and comments every time I ride mine. When I built it up those were the biggest tires you could get. They are 4.7" now they make like a 5.1" or something like that.

Did you carry it onto the trail? Looks way too clean to have been ridden on dirt. Nice bike though. :D

No scuffs on the pedals and cranks it even has the platforms clipped into the pedals, no marks on the saddle or grips..

No wear on the chain rings

A bike not ridden much

This came yesterday, and it is done for the most part now. I need to make minor tweaks like saddle position/height, and possibly redo the bar tape. Currently running single speed. Fixed may be down the road. Always wanted to try it, and now I can. Will be used mainly to commute to work as long as it is not raining or snowing.

Thanks! Yours looks really nice, loving that color combo. I already swapped out the front tire to a Specialized Armadillo, swapped the stem to a slightly shorter one with more rise, and put my Specialized BG black saddle on there. Looking for another stem, even shorter, with some rise to close the cockpit in a little. Feeling stretched out a bit on it.

Sarcasmville.
So, I've been really keen on getting a road bike. So after asking around for advice and some research and looking around. I'm settling on a pretty entry level Giant Defy 1 (2014)

It's pure coincidence that it's the same colour as my previously posted Giant Anthem X2.

There's some nice rides out there, but I'm going to start low, and see where I end up. I don't exactly have the best record when it comes to motivation.

Amazed I don't have one of just the bike somewhere. Do have a few of me racing it though. I am on the front here.

New tri bike fun! Selling my black and grey 58cm and moved to a smaller frame for a better fit. It has a ton of tririg goodies on it too. Also updated bars/stem/seat post on the roadie to ritchey carbon and turning my garage into a winter pain cave.

I feel like this looks very familiar.

Finally finished with my commuter for work.

It appears that my inner hipster has issues, because it is a fakie, not a fixie. Custom rear wheel built with a Shimano coaster brake, DT swiss spokes and black nipples.

Changed a few things out, Fyxation track grips/bar ends, Specialized Armadillo tires, Specialized Avatar saddle, and I put a beat to hell Sette EDGE stem on there for street cred. :D

Finally got around to doing something I've been meaning to do for a while, a fork swap on my commuter. It's a Dawes Discovery 401, originally came with a fairly mundane and pointless RST 'trekking' suspension fork. I always ride it locked out anyway, it had started to knock/creak and it was fairly heavy (about 2 kilos).

So I looked around for a suitable rigid replacement that wouldn't break the bank and came across the Salsa Cromoto 29er, which is the closest I could find in terms of geometry. Got it for £78 ($110).

Also picked up a fairly cheap but nice looking headset from ebay, Aest brand, came in at £15 ($20 ish).

Fitted it yesterday evening/this morning and I think it looks pretty good (yes I need some cable ties for the front brake cable). Rides nice too.

This is 'Irritant 1' of 3 irritants I want to address on the bike, the fork (done), the brakes (currently rather shoddy mechanical disks) and the gears (tired Alivio/Altus mix).

Pics attached hopefully.

I've never understood those forks either they don't actually dampen anything and weigh quite a bit.
