1,6L engine in an SUV? Wow that's pretty cool.

Yeah 1.6L turbo making 178HP and 184TQ

Can get the 2.0L turbo that makes 240HP 270TQ but its just the wife's daily driver and our main winter ride. If we planned on towing then we would have went for the bigger motor. It was a $1000+ option and a 2MPG hit.

1.6 AWD is rated for 30mpg highway, 22 city

Nice car Lobeyone!

Mine's an '89 Mini Thirty - Just got it restored to it's former glory. Get a Mini again, you won't regret it (and no fancy BMW's please)!

Cheers, we wish we'd kept it but at the time it wasn't too practical with two growing kids. We live in Canada now and it would've turned heads for sure!

They are certainly a timeless classic.

Browsing through this topic, I can't help but wonder why BMW's seem so popular (in the USA?).
Here in Belgium, they're somewhat overpriced cars, not too special at all, in fact as default as the next Audi or something, with a notorious list of overpriced options that's about the size of a luxury bible...

In brief, if I were to spend that kind of fat budget, I'd definitely be shopping other more exclusive and better brands.

So, the US market is different?

I have been a huge BMW fan (two 3 series, an M3, and a 5 series) because I love how the cars drive and handle, and I love their fit and finish, and my dealer's service center is second to none.

But I've abandoned the brand because it has gone out of control with continuously increasing costs, i.e. price of entry and cost of maintenance once out of warranty. I don't have the time nor inclination to become a weekend grease jockey to keep a Bimmer going on my own.

Now I have a Subaru STi. It has pretty much as good performance as the E46 M3 I had, at nearly half the price. The fit and finish isn't the same, but it is more than good enough. Subaru's reputation for reliability is also better.

I love you.

People just drink the Kool-aid. Buy a $40k bottom rung 3 series and it comes with no leather, no xenons, no moonroof, no power seat, no heated seats, no nothing. So in other words you are paying for the brand, along with the worst orange peel paint finish in the industry. By the time you put on the features that one would expect standard on a luxury make, it costs almost $50k and you are still driving the bottom rung car.

BMW=severely overpriced, average cars, with a clever marketing campaign. As I always say, they haven't built an "ultimate driving machine" in over two decades. It doesn't help when you see BMWs on every corner either.

I think that's a bit harsh.

My problem with BMWs is I think they are too expensive (in that we agree), but I still like the cars. I had planned to get a 1 Series for myself, and would have loved the M Coupe, but I think it is/was overpriced. My E46 M3 was a blast, and I loved tracking it. I miss that. I don't really care that they are common. I don't feel the need for exclusivity in my car.

If I had money to spend and I wanted something for $70K I don't know that there is something else I'd rather have than an E92 M3. But it's a moot point because I'm not going to spend $70K on a car.

BMW makes great cars even if they aren't always pretty. I don't want one, but I know the people who have them are loving every minute of it.

I'm leaving in the morning on a 4,000 mile road trip and my NSX is clean, serviced, and ready to go.

Not bad for a 17 year old car. I see it rolled over to an easy to remember number to start the trip. :)

See y'all in a couple weeks!

^^^I loathe the hoods on the new 3 series...and the headlights extending to the grill...ugh.

Still, comfortable, but please BMW go back to making the 3 series small. It's the size of an old 7 series now:mad: I think the E39 5 series was the perfect size for a 4 door, and the 3 series should have only been a 2 door. The E28 M5 is still on my bucket list, as well as a E24 M6.

I do still want to sell my swapped E30 for a E46 M3, even if the E46 would be slower and worse on track. Though there is a LS3 E36 M3 that has caught my eye...

I don't think its harsh. It's quite accurate. He's talking about the average BMW buyer--not us enthusiasts.

Someone above mentioned the paint is bad/inferior/has orange peel on the BMW's

This is mine - I have yet to ever see any orange peel or bad paint finish on the car.

This is the first time I've ever heard anyone even mention bad paint on BMW's

I've had '99 323i, '02 530i, '03 330i, '05 M3
Not a single paint problem, not even in the slightest. The Carbon Black paint on the M3 was stunning.

The orange peel paint is a known issue. Either BMW USA is full of ****, or they've never seen orange peel before. My ex-gf's father's -11 BMW 750 was resprayed by BMW last summer. They're where sufficiently ass-kissing about it, but i believe that might've had something to do with the fact that the car has military plates...

Also, from what i know, its a recent issue. Mainly -08 and newer.

The more haters I see talking down about my car, the better I feel about owning my BMW. I'm on my 3rd year of owning it and I've loved every bit of it. And frankly, that's all that matters to me.

BMW's aren't bad cars, never have been. But they've had a drop in quality the last few years. They're still splendid cars, and I'd never hesitate to buy one, they're just not as good as they used to be. My neighbour has a E30 that's done over 240k miles and still purrs like a kitten. With no major issues aside from the normal service parts and a new clutch. Now that's good 'ol BMW quality.
