oh, great, I think I just lost my Mercedes fanboy status.... I could no longer identify *any* Mercedes within 5 seconds by looking at the dash, grill, headlight or any other part on the car. (something I used to be able to do several years ago) :( :( :(

Another flea market macro shot (Finnish WWII medals) with the UWA lens (which also explains why it's of lower quality than a 1x camera macro). As always, ProRAW + Preview conversion; no pp except for a slight crop.

Here's the exact list & explanation of these medals:

And my entire flea market album of today (all ProRAW; most with the 1x lens; very few with the 0,5x one): https://www.flickr.com/photos/33448355@N07/albums/72177720303148704

it definitely is for me. The ****** bokeh doesn't help. Focal planes are very hard to see.
Yup, the large sensor + bright lens combo results in (for a smartphone(!)) shallow DoF. Very hard to make shots with everything in focus unless they're almost exactly in the focal pane and we're sufficiently far away. As I mostly use my phone camera for documenting purposes (taking flea market shots for friends for example so that they can tell me if they do need something they see in the pics), I'm always having a hard time keeping everything in focus.

BTW, speaking of my today's flea market shots: on this photo:

I've just noticed a great opportunity to compare the 1x lens sharpness in the corners to that of in less extreme places, closer to the center. Check out the two price tags (also attached them as crops): one in almost the bottom right corner, the other at around the vertical center of the image. The latter is FAR more readable.

Nevertheless, the 1x camera's optics is still extremely good. While I still haven't had the time to compare it to my 10-year-old 42 Mpixel Nokia 808, I bet the iPhone beats the Nokia in the lens sharpness dept too.

Note: this isn't caused by the corner tag's not being on the focal plane! I was sufficiently away from the images and the tag was definitely in the focal plane.

I just updated to iOS 16.1 on my 14 pro max and I can see nice camera updates to the image files. The ProRAW captures at 48mp is twice as fast now or slightly faster. The image quality has improved some, and I feel like I have a new camera. I have overcast skies so I can’t test the stars. Rain on the way. Anyway, here is a sample. I don’t have any before and after images, these are just things I’ve noticed as I take photos every day and these changes stand out to me. Maybe you’ll also see these changes if you shoot often enough and know your iPhone camera well.

After having shot some 130 shots (most of them 48 Mpixel RAWs) today and having immediately sending some 30-40 of them: Indeed the 16.1 update has helped a LOT:

1, a LOT(!!!) faster RAW save times - you can take your next shot a lot earlier than with 16.0.x.

2, MacOS' "Image Capture" app now seems to be listing all images immediately and not after some hours / some forced phone reboots (note: I do NOT have any kind of iCloud image sharing; that used to be one? the only? reason for such a delay in my experience in previous major iOS versions. However, even with disabled iCloud image sharing (uploads), I've continuously been having problems with "Image Capture", the phone still being on 16.0.x, not immediately listing the last-shot RAWs when I tried to transfer the images to my Mac via "Image Capture".)

3, now, in iOS' "Photos" (I use Photos for Whatsapp sharing because Whatsapp can't select more than one image for sending at a time, while I can mass-select images in Photos and, then, share them to Whatsapp), if I (try to) share images too quickly after taking them, a progress modal dialog is displayed - that is, Photos doesn't seem to just refuse doing anything any more. (Real-life situation: I shoot flea market images into 48 Mpixel RAWs and, when I know a particular item is highly sought after some of my friends, I also immediately send them images via Skype or Whatsapp so that they can immediately tell me whether I should purchase the item for them. This way, I can avoid the item to be sold for someone else.)

On 16.0.x, if I too quickly did this in Photos, it just didn't do anything. This seems to be fixed now.

All in all, if you do shoot a lot and particularly RAWs, do yourself a favor and update!
