Pixel peep(ers)
, I got a wee bit of a confession to make...
I don't know if I can trust my pixel(s) enough to make them my sole daily driver... Just something about them and previous issues and spotty service no matter what carrier I use.
Sure as a secondary device on fi or a different carrier, sure because that gives me redundancy and a bit of a toy I can tinker with, but a primary
I think that is one reason my XL 3 has sat (that and I was not quite sure on it before I purchased it, was going to hold on to the 2 until the 4 came out)
The thought of the note 9 or X has crossed my mind a bit but the junkware on it I don't know either
Ugh, we need another contender instead of just the 2 we have now because nothing is bringing much new to the table other then ridiculous pricing
I’ve had enough medical emergencies now involving either myself or a family member to feel I should try to have two lines for as long as I can afford to and to carry two phones on me as often as I can.
I’ve had one phone get notifications on social media apps immediately from the school and the other fail—usually the failure for that is on Android. I’ve missed critical time sensitive emails on iOS but gotten them on Android. With performance hiccups like that it is nerve wracking sometimes to contemplate going back to a single line.
Last year I was injured and my iPhone 8 Plus would not work for me (due to some freaky snafu with the Apple Watch still being paired to the XS Max I returned or some weird crap with my iCloud account and AT&T number sync. Whatever).
For me, Apple hardware is pretty solid but it’s all the cloud stuff that tends to throw a wrench into things. Sometimes it is user error, but that doesn’t mean much when you’re racing against bacteria circulating from deep puncture wounds to inflict blood poisoning.
I had known from a day or two prior that there was some weird issue with my parents not being able to reach me but we thought it was a passing issue with AT&T. After my emergency we took a closer look to properly figure it out and sort it. In the meantime, I had a phone that seemed to work but really wasn’t.
Anyway the damn call was not going out on my 8 Plus and in that case it was my S9+ to the rescue. (Edit to clarify I wasn’t trying to reach 911 service. Just my husband for a ride to the ER).
Another time I needed to be on the phone to emergency services while having my husband on the other phone since it was his family who was having the emergency. So I had an iPhone in one hand and S9+ in the other.
So far the Pixel 3XL hasn’t malfunctioned for my husband in any way that is any different from what the Samsung was doing on a different sim, which makes me think something was up with AT&T for those issues.
And this past year AT&T has been a hot mess for us. A lot of other people have been complaining about weirdness on Verizon, as well. I think 5G and faux 5G build outs have caused some of these problems for customers.
In other observations, when my husband and I both have had XS Maxes, we would have signal on our Samsungs or Pixels or his Huawei but zero on the Maxes. Apple needs to get that sorted. It’s still going on for my husband. Sound quality of calls on my Max was crap. It was a lovely device for many purposes, but connectivity can be an issue. I had WiFi connectivity problems on it, too.
I do better on my Xr. I think the modem and antenna on it are pretty good. 8 Plus is okay too, but sound quality of calls is poorer for some reason. 7 Pluses were barely tolerable and that was on a Qualcomm modem! I guess we had ones with the bad mics.
I guess based on my last two generations of phones I’d probably go with Samsung for reliability and good call quality with AT&T. My Pixel 2 has been no slouch, either.
I used my S9+ more because it has been such a well rounded high performer and a very nice size to carry and to use. I sometimes regret not having the guts to go from the 8 Plus straight to the S9+ and calling it a day on Apple upgrades.
But kicking off the iOS training wheels was/is scary for a longtime iPhone user like myself to contemplate. And when they put such a great camera with stereo audio recording capability onto the 2018 phones after all these years...I just couldn’t resist.
Sorry this post is so long. A lot of my posts recently are because I’m fatigued and take forever to make a point. Anyway I do understand what you’re saying. Google really does need another generation to prove the Pixel line. You’re certainly not the only person I’ve read posting this concern.
