You've got Frosty! You don't need a Xr anymore :)
True, I really don't. But it feels really really weird to think that way after so many years with an iPhone . Right now Frosty actually does not have a Sim .The sim is in my S9+. I will be switching the Xr's sim over after making sure my contacts who sometimes call me via FaceTime get Duo.

Any place but here or there....
I'm way past any return or exchange period so I will have to deal with the genius bar to resolve it at some point when I can summon the time and patience.

We are up to our ears in elder care stuff which is why playing around with phones is the only "hobby" I have energy for.

I used to do a lot more with my time but dropping everything and picking back up over and over...after awhile you just throw your hands in the air and resign yourself to your smartphone being your best amusement. It really is amazing the variety of entertainment and assistance and utility these little slabs of glass and metal can provide. When viewed that way, I suppose they are worth a lot.

I completely get the no time and why. Hopefully the Apple folks will swap it out. Hope Frosty works well for you, and more importantly all is good with the family.

Thank you. It’s the commutes through horrific traffic that are beating us down. It’s all that time on the road and then long hours waiting for doctors or different things to happen.

It’s how I got to this point where pretty much all I can get excited about is smartphones. When I someday get the time and energy, I want to actually get away from technology a bit and lose myself in art. I want to go to all the galleries and exhibits in DC. I want to look at weird modern art and say “What the hell is that supposed to be?” and have all the art afficianados turn to give me the stink eye. :D

In more Pixelly news...Snowball is staying!! It’s a good thing @AustinIllini came up with the name Frosty for the 3XL. It came time to place Snowball in the box and my husband said “You don’t have to do this.” I can’t imagine the look on my face that prompted him to say that. It was probably something like this: :(

:D:D:D

Oh well Snowball’s warranty expires around the same time Frosty’s does, so I may as well keep her. To celebrate her staying in my life I’m going to put her back into the case with the mint green button. Her current one has an orange button. I’m such a wild and crazy party girl. :p Yes, Snowball will get used. No, she won’t sit idle on a shelf.

One quick observation about Frosty. I appreciate the simplicity of Google’s Android phones.

I’ve been using my Samsung S9+ all day on Pie. It’s really nice. But Bixby...man...I like swiping left and having Google news on there, not that Bixby page. Bixby has this page that reminds me of the widget page on iOS. I guess it’s okay and some people would prefer that. I don’t know. Maybe it will grow on me. But I already have widgets set up where I want them. It’s redundant. I just want the news. I guess I will have to customize that page more and de-widget it a bit. Make it more Googley. ;)

Understand with doctors and frustrations. Traffic? Someone else deals with the traffic here, but I am thankfully here to perform day to day duties. I actually want my tech to settle so I can go back to creating art :D, different story all together.

Glad you were able to keep Snowball. You’ve spoken so fondly of that phone, it is nice to hear you do not have to let it go. :). Interesting that the warranty will expire the same time as Frosty.

I wish you all the best with your phones and I always appreciate reading about them in this sub forum. It gives me an idea of what to expect when I decide to try Android again.

All I’d like is in screen finger print reader, no PWM/vision issues, lower price, and a phone that isn’t much bigger than the 8+. No notch/Face ID things for me.

I've had my 3 XL just over 2 months now and my first somewhat major issue popped up.

Seems I've started not getting all my texts. My wife will send me a few texts and they don't make sense and it's because one in the middle is missing. Talked to my mom and she also mentioned texts that I never replied too or seemingly ignored. It all started happening a few days ago and I've done some resets on network settings and such. Double checked the APNs etc. but no luck. And pictures? Right now those are 50/50 if they go through or not (sending and receiving).

Did you use iMessage before and are they using iPhones?

My wife is using an iPhone. My mom isn't. I haven't used iMessage in over 2 months and haven't had any issues until a few days ago. They both deleted prior conversations etc.

Very strange. I occasionally miss a text in the middle of a group conversation. I always figured it was iMessage. Frustrating to say the least.

Tmobile. They blame the phone.
I had the same issue with my Galaxy S8+ a few months after purchasing the phone. I de-registered my number from iMessage prior to buying the S8+ and I checked with Apple to ensure that my number was de-registered properly (it was). I was getting texts just fine for a bit on my S8+ and then the same texting issue started happening to me. I wouldn’t receive texts and some of my texts weren’t sending. I was missing vital texts, including an important one from my landlord. I contacted Samsung to see what was happening. They said it must be a carrier issue. I contacted my carrier and they said it must be a phone issue. The problem continued to persist and no one had answers for me. I sold my S8+ and now I have an iPhone 8 Plus with no texting issues. I need a reliable phone. I hope you get some answers because I couldn’t and I didn’t.

I have an iPhone XS that I really don't want to use but if I can't figure this out I may give it a try to see if I miss any texts while back on the iPhone.

This is back from November: https://www.androidauthority.com/google-pixel-3-missing-messages-problem-issue-924658/. Seems like it's still not fully fixed unless they sorted it out in the February update that became available a couple of hours ago.

That's discouraging but I just installed the February update so I'll see how it goes.

I've absolutely never missed texts on an Android using the number that's never had iMessage registeted to it. I've heard of people missing messages like this and the problem seems to trace back to iMessage in those cases, but I've never seen an explanation how or why.

I was going to switch my iMessages off and switch my sim over from my iPhone to my Pixel this week but I think I may hold off on that. I may just give out my Android number to the wider circle of friends and extended family. My closest contacts already have both of my numbers by now.

I am beginning to resent Apple now because I want a clean break but it seems a bit more complicated than I would like. Though this issue you're having likely has nothing to do with Apple. I am just thinking of my own situation and concerns.

Today my husband running his S9+ and his Pixel 3XL for no reason that we can figure out was not getting a cellular data connection for big chunks oit of the day. We were on the road a lot today.

Sometimes 5G was showing up on his Samsung. Our carrier is AT&T. They're doing that faux 5G rollout in our area right now. I had standard LTE data available on my Pixel at the times my husband had no data on either of his Android phones. Neither of us was carrying our iPhones today. One daughter had hers and she had cellular data.

Cool! I'm posting from Snowball while Frosty gets the update. I am going to wipe Snowball clean and copy my setup from Frosty on to Snowball.

I do like getting the updates so fast on the Pixels. It's a little bit irksome sometimes waiting for AT&T to release an update to my Samsung. Especially if it's one I am eager to get like the pink screen fix.

Pixel peep(ers) :p, I got a wee bit of a confession to make...

I don't know if I can trust my pixel(s) enough to make them my sole daily driver... Just something about them and previous issues and spotty service no matter what carrier I use. :(

Sure as a secondary device on fi or a different carrier, sure because that gives me redundancy and a bit of a toy I can tinker with, but a primary

I think that is one reason my XL 3 has sat (that and I was not quite sure on it before I purchased it, was going to hold on to the 2 until the 4 came out)

The thought of the note 9 or X has crossed my mind a bit but the junkware on it I don't know either o_O

Ugh, we need another contender instead of just the 2 we have now because nothing is bringing much new to the table other then ridiculous pricing

Clean breaks from Apple are tricky. I’ve been trying for two years, finally starting to do so.

If I trade this 8+ in for an Android at Verizon, I may just buy a new Sim.

I barely use iMessage, but given the cluster bleeps I’ve had with iPhone activations in the past, it might be a good idea.

I hope you get that cellular issue sorted soon.

I’ve had enough medical emergencies now involving either myself or a family member to feel I should try to have two lines for as long as I can afford to and to carry two phones on me as often as I can.

I’ve had one phone get notifications on social media apps immediately from the school and the other fail—usually the failure for that is on Android. I’ve missed critical time sensitive emails on iOS but gotten them on Android. With performance hiccups like that it is nerve wracking sometimes to contemplate going back to a single line.

Last year I was injured and my iPhone 8 Plus would not work for me (due to some freaky snafu with the Apple Watch still being paired to the XS Max I returned or some weird crap with my iCloud account and AT&T number sync. Whatever).

For me, Apple hardware is pretty solid but it’s all the cloud stuff that tends to throw a wrench into things. Sometimes it is user error, but that doesn’t mean much when you’re racing against bacteria circulating from deep puncture wounds to inflict blood poisoning.

I had known from a day or two prior that there was some weird issue with my parents not being able to reach me but we thought it was a passing issue with AT&T. After my emergency we took a closer look to properly figure it out and sort it. In the meantime, I had a phone that seemed to work but really wasn’t.

Anyway the damn call was not going out on my 8 Plus and in that case it was my S9+ to the rescue. (Edit to clarify I wasn’t trying to reach 911 service. Just my husband for a ride to the ER).

Another time I needed to be on the phone to emergency services while having my husband on the other phone since it was his family who was having the emergency. So I had an iPhone in one hand and S9+ in the other.

So far the Pixel 3XL hasn’t malfunctioned for my husband in any way that is any different from what the Samsung was doing on a different sim, which makes me think something was up with AT&T for those issues.

And this past year AT&T has been a hot mess for us. A lot of other people have been complaining about weirdness on Verizon, as well. I think 5G and faux 5G build outs have caused some of these problems for customers.

In other observations, when my husband and I both have had XS Maxes, we would have signal on our Samsungs or Pixels or his Huawei but zero on the Maxes. Apple needs to get that sorted. It’s still going on for my husband. Sound quality of calls on my Max was crap. It was a lovely device for many purposes, but connectivity can be an issue. I had WiFi connectivity problems on it, too.

I do better on my Xr. I think the modem and antenna on it are pretty good. 8 Plus is okay too, but sound quality of calls is poorer for some reason. 7 Pluses were barely tolerable and that was on a Qualcomm modem! I guess we had ones with the bad mics.

I guess based on my last two generations of phones I’d probably go with Samsung for reliability and good call quality with AT&T. My Pixel 2 has been no slouch, either.

I used my S9+ more because it has been such a well rounded high performer and a very nice size to carry and to use. I sometimes regret not having the guts to go from the 8 Plus straight to the S9+ and calling it a day on Apple upgrades.

But kicking off the iOS training wheels was/is scary for a longtime iPhone user like myself to contemplate. And when they put such a great camera with stereo audio recording capability onto the 2018 phones after all these years...I just couldn’t resist.

Sorry this post is so long. A lot of my posts recently are because I’m fatigued and take forever to make a point. Anyway I do understand what you’re saying. Google really does need another generation to prove the Pixel line. You’re certainly not the only person I’ve read posting this concern.

I hope neither of you or your relatives have medical emergencies this year.

Sheesh, that’s annoying that you couldn’t rely on one OS to get all those important communications.

Yeah, as you know the connectivity problems with this year’s pricier X phones could be hardware or something else. It’s another reason why I went with an 8+ and am eager to try Android again.

I can certainly understand the temptation to want to upgrade. The 7+ cured me of my iPhone lust (actually after yearly upgrades due to hardware failures (no drops, water dunks etc.), these were things like battery and SIM card failures, I just want to slow down with phone upgrades since I only use them mildly at work and my commutes, rarely at home.

Well poooooop! So weird that after that post, I ended up needing a second phone again. This time I had my Xr with me for backup and was using my Pixel 3XL to handle things.

I was having some car trouble. It's a long story so cutting to the chase: at the point in the conversation where I thought he has dropped off to call the other people involved in our car pool while I dealt with the car, he was actually still on the call. Apparently neither of us could hear each other for a minute or so. I was quite startled to discover he was still on the call when I heard his voice again all of a sudden.

Near as I can tell something similar to the cut out in this article happened to us on that call.

At one point a telemarketer called me on my iPhone while all this was going on. Good Lord why can't we make cold call telemarketing illegal?

And at another point I did legitimately end the call and he called me back and Google Call Screen answered. I tried to pick up the call but I was too flustered and apparently could not so I said the heck with it and called him back on my iPhone. The entire time I was swiping both phones all over like a mad woman trying to find this and that.

I'm too old for all of this. I'm going to get a flip phone with buttons.

Really anytime there's even remotely a crisis I turn into my grandmother.

So anyway just when you think you know a phone...sigh.

I did place another call to my husband under less stressful circumstances and we had a good quality call. No hisses and no drop outs between the two Pixel 3XL's. Very clear. However I wasn't outside trying to start the #$@! car. So take that for what it's worth.

Edited many times to fix many typos and blather because I am clearly still frazzled.
