here's my guess:

apple will discontinue the mini, but at the same time announce a better apple TV...apple TV premium including DVD drive and some kind of PVR.

this will be all in time for leopard. why have they announced a quicktime full screen update today?

what do you think?

I think there is a good chance that Apple will release an iMac that is even cheaper than the 999 dollar one. Maybe one with a 15' LCD, Combo Drive, GMA 950, C2D 2.0 GHZ, 100GB 5400 RPM HD, 700 - 800 dollars.

Who do the Mac Minis sell to?

A) Schools
B) Buisinesses
C) People who want an affordable Mac

Well, if Apple did this, it would be great because schools and buisinesses are going to buy a mass production of these, and they don't need to buy monitors, and schools and buisinesses don't need to have a top-of-the-line graphics card unless they are into 3D rendering which is what the upperclass iMacs or Mac Pros are for, and the 100 GB HD is big enough for normal use.
People who want an affordable Mac will love this because if you are out to buy the cheapest model of a computer, you obviously aren't going to be into too much gaming. The GMA 950 can do some 3D games such as EverQuest, WoW, Halo, etc. just fine, because I have a MacBook Core Duo and I can run most games just fine.

But what if the person already has a monitor and doesn't want to pay extra for something he already has?

A) They have no choice, you have to buy the iMac.
B) The Mac Mini comes into play.

The Mac Mini was really for small buisiness who want to show a slideshow, or a movie while people are at a restaurant, a small server, or maybe just a cheap alternative to hold all your songs onto, they weren't really for home use.

Of course they were. The entire purpose of the Mac mini is to provide a "stepping stone" from PC to Mac for ordinary people. Any other use people get out of them is bonus.

IMaybe one with a 15' LCD, Combo Drive,

YOu had me until you wrote that part. A 15" screen is probably more expensive at this point than a 19" screen given the low demand for 15"

Oh, I hadn't thought of that. Maybe they can sign some sort of contract with a company to sell 15' LCD screens cheaper, because 19' screens can get pricey.

They're gonna be updated in 5....4.....3.....2......1.....lol

or they'll be replaced by some new ppppppooowwwwwerrrrbooks (maybe the G5).

If they don't plan on updating it or if they're too busy they should lower the price by 200$, that requires virtually no effort.

Mini?

I really hope that the Mini remains as an option either as it is or redesigned? I use Minis' as RIP stations and scanning staions at work and nothing could replace the space saving Mini when you have 2 RIP stations and one scanning station connected to a KVM switch sharing 1 LCD, KB and mouse!!!!! The whole setup takes up less room than 1 tower would.

I'm probably a little late to the game, but heck, I want to buy a mini as a HTPC. The one glaring reason I am not is the lack of dedicated graphics. I am crossing my fingers they update the mini and update the graphics too. If/when that happens is anyones guess.
I will say i think its crock of crap that we will see any updates (imac, ipod, or mini) before september and october. No company releases updated products during the middle of a huge sale (in this case, the back to school sale). The whole point, i believe, is to get rid of old stock and the new machines will be ready in time for the new OS in October. Same thing happened with updates last year. As soon as the back-to-school sale ended, ipod nano ver 2, ipod shuffle, upgraded iMacs, and upgraded Macbooks were all right around the corner.
thoughts anyone?

thoughts anyone?

Yes, this is the logical move from Apple.

I said before, I think the mini will become :apple:TV 2.0 in October. The iPhone is the new mini. iPhone version 2 will appear Oct or November sporting 16 or 32 GB flash HD. the new docks will allow integration with an LCD and keyboard/mouse.

I hope the new nano's are all touch, and double as an :apple:TV or front row remote.

I don't know what else they can do with the shuffle

Cross your fingers that the Mini at least gets the new Santa Rosa chipset so it will have the dramatically improved Intel graphics.

The mini's already a great HTPC - mine runs on one. As long as you're dealing with DVDs or 720 H.264-encoded movies it'll do just fine. It will also handle 1080 H.264-encoded movies that aren't too complex and if you have a dual core processor. The dedicated graphics is really overblown for home theater use - after all, you're just talking about 2D graphics.

I was also hoping to use it for light gaming. Emulators for the old classics and some PC games, all on the big screen! At least, it seems like an idea i would like to try.

I want to use the mini to replace my dvd player and wirelessly stream photos, music, and movies from my network (hey, just like the apple tv!). I can then keep a wireless keyboard and mouse handy for the games.
So.... how good are those onboard graphics for games?

July 24th

Apple will have its major hardware overhaul on July 24th, mark my words...

Intel drops chip prices on the 22nd, 2 promos end the 23rd, sufficient time after iphone and before school.... and everything's overdue!!!!

If the mini is dead because it hasn't been updated for so long, then the iMac is dead too. Well, at least based on some of your guys logic, since they both were updated over 300 days ago.

I truly wish I could agree with this, but Apple has done illogical things in the past. I will agree that the mini is dead if there is an iMac and MacBook update to Santa Rosa without any mention of the mini. If this happens, the poor mini would be two generations of chips behind the other machines and would spell out EOL in capital letters.

But according to many rumours, this, in fact may well be true. The iMac in it's currently designed form may be dead.

I hope they do the following to the Mini

1) Do not kill it, as I want an updated one!
2) Give it the Santa Rosa chipset so it has better graphics!
3) Standard 1gb of ram
4) Lower the price to $499. Seriously!

If they did all 4, this thing would sell like hot cakes again and would help get switchers.
