I doubt youll see an optical drive b/c the MBA is all about light weight and sleek design. adding that optical drive would add too much weight I think and would prolly have to thicken the MBA up a lil too just too have room for it

hell with the optical drive! i pray for the removal of MB and MBP's optical drives.

better go with external drive. you don't use the optical drive all the time these days. it just makes the notebook weights more.

i wish they make all their notebooks without optical drives and include the external superdrives, or maybe external bluray in macworld 09.

Yeah, this occurred to me yesterday: they could have removed the optical drive from the Pros and re-engineered them to work with the Air's external drive (and probably, shipped it in the box).

Even better would be a slot-out removable unit that you could replace with a secondary battery. They used to do this way back in the early Powerbook days, and it worked well.

This picture clearly explains the absurd tradeoff of spatial area that an optical drive requires:

When I sit my superdrive next to my closed macbook air... I swear the macbook air is thinner than the superdrive.

I dont like the MBA because of the fact you have to buy everything for it separately such as CD drive and that If I ever was able to get a mac it would be a mac book pro

You will see it removed by MacWorld 09. Maybe at the same time they will introduce MBA take 2, perhaps with a build in optical drive?

Again with the optical drive.. Read my lips - there will be no MBA with optical drive.. ever. This is what MacBook is for.

god damn dude! it's a waste of huge space. apple please remove the optical drive which can make the possibility of the notebooks to be even thinner, less weight, and less hotter because of the good air circulation by the free space it gives.

I'm aching for a truly portable apple computer - I'm not interested in the new Glassbook because of the poor screen (and also because I want to protest at the removal of firewire). I played with the current gen MBA with SSD and frankly i wanted to take it home with me. I have a Mac Pro at home but really i need to have some basic portability of my software - I just gave away my MBP because it's too big and heavy. Will MBA run (albeit extremely limited) any of these?

Photoshop CS3
After Effects CS3
Logic Pro 8
Final Cut Pro 6 (or iMovie)

the current mba has no firewire too. and for your purposes, it's better with the MBP or MBA. you wanted the mba because it's sexy. it happens to me.

i sold my 2 months MBP penryn and bought the MBA because of it's sexiness.

Little OT, but is it possible to just take out the optical drive yourself and leave the empty space in the case? It wouldn't make the computer any thinner, but it would make it lighter and cooler.

it's possible. that's what i'm gonna do when i received the new mbp. because i heard the new mbp has more weight than the predecessor.

It's been 2 weeks now, and another 12 days at least before it's released...

patience..patience..patience...

I'm worried that taking out such a big part would make the other components inside... jiggly for a lack of a better word. It looks like that the optical drive is securing the speakers from the picture.
Damn the inside of the new mb/mbp is a work of art :D.

There is a way to use the optical drive of a computer on your network for those one-off times you need an optical drive.

The MB Air won't be for all, some people just need to realize it takes just a little out of the box thinking to use happily.
Then it is obvious that you do not belong in the Macbook Air forum. Please leave.
Tsk tsk :) Everyone is welcome, you don't need to be a fanboi to be here. Clearly bengal hasn't given consideration to how well life can work without an optical drive. It doesn't make him/her a bad person.

lol, yes it's sexy but also the only Mac light enough to be considered truly portable. I gave away my MBP to a relative, because of it's size and weight it was used more like a Desktop than Laptop. I realise there's no firewire but since I can't buy a Glassbook with firewire I'm thinking I might as well get the Air and have a better screen to boot.

A curious thing perhaps..

I just looked at Amazon for a possible pre-order from them and they have it as a pre-order but the spec sheet they have has an error.

It's definitely the new spec sheet as it list all the new but has the hard drive as a parallel (PATA) drive, which according to the Apple site (and common knowledge at this point) is actually a serial ATA (SATA) drive.
(I know cuz I went and double checked :) )

i'm too waiting for the rev B, i hope they fixed the heat issues this time, and SATA plus 9400M ain't a bad upgrade.

Meh, not like people actually use that sore excuse for a button on the Air. The people I know who own Airs just generally use the tap to click option anyways.
