First, it doesn't crop anything meaningful from the image. As I have quite clearly stated, in the particular scenario I discussed, only black borders are cropped.Crops huge amount of video, you're losing a lot of quality. It may not seem like it but you're not getting 1080p.
Second, I offered this tip merely as a way to watch a portrait video that has been formatted as landscape (i.e. had black bars to the sides) in such a way that it filled the whole screen rather than being in a tiny window. I never claimed it improved quality or upscaled it to 1080P or anything like that. It won't be 1080P because the process of converted it to landscape will have to downscale to get the vertical 1920 pixels down to 1080 (at the most) to fit into landscape.
Please take the tip for what it was!
