I'm not seeing any CPU or SSD temps either. My guess is that the app needs a Kaby Lake update.
Try "Fanny".

I wrote to Bjango (makers of iStat Menus) and got a quick reply advising me to download the app again from their website.

Having done that everything is working perfectly again! All temps are displaying.

Try "Fanny".

Thanks for the tip but the fan speeds were working all along in iStat Menus. It was just the temperature sensors that were gone until the reinstall. ;)

Using a 12South BackPack to attach a 2TB Western Digital portable HDD to the back of the system. For now this is disconnected and used for remote usage. I have about 300GB of my 1TB SSD free. When it becomes full I will start offloading some iTunes content to it and leave it permanently plugged in.

Any particular reason you leave the drive unplugged at all times?

Set up looks nice, by the way....

so the combo i7+580 is again loud and hot like we had in the past i7+m295x

I have the i7+m290x combo and there is no noise at all if you run the Cinebench CPU Test like the guy in the video. It looks like with the 2014 5K iMac the problem was the m295x GPU and not the CPU!. The m290x is perfect for me, very quiet and gives still about 110 fps with the Cinebench GPU test (CPU 4 GHz i7 shows 800 cb). So the new 2017 max specced iMac is less than 20% faster than my 3 Year old 2014 iMac with mid range GPU which is really insignificant. So no reason to upgrade until they change the form factor or made some other real improvements....

I just got my 21" with i7, Radeon Pro 560, 1 TB SSD, and 16 GB RAM.

I have to say: it's a huge improvement over the 2015 21" (which I only tried briefly for a month or so). I almost never hear the fan, even when editing videos and using StreetView (things that cause the fan in my MBP to rev high). The graphics are much better than the integrated graphics and everything seems "zipper". The downside is the lack of 2 TB options (whether Fusion or SSD). And yeah, I don't like the Magic Mouse, but that's why I use the MX Master.

Overall, I have almost nothing to complain about.

Thanks for posting about the high end 21.5" configuration. I am thinking this may be the way I go when it comes time to upgrade but that won't be for awhile yet.

Because if I offload iTunes content to it I want to be able to access it at all times or stream it at will with Home Sharing.

EssentialLy my iMac will serve as a media server. It's a pain to have to reach back and plug it in if I want to watch a certain tv show. Also, I did a lot of research and it seems that leaving it in at all times is not a problem for modern HDDs.

No problem! I'm glad you found my post helpful! Honestly, I think it's the speakers. I remember clearly that I was very pleasantly surprised how good the 2015 speakers sounded. The ones built into my 27 inch Apple Cinema Display that is connected to my Mac Pro sounds very decent and has decent bass for built in units. I will let these speakers break in a bit and see if the sound opens up a little more. I will report back once at a later time.

And most definitely, I get why Apple put in a Fusion Drive as the stock option. The vast majority of iMac owners just walk into their local Apple Store or Best Buy and get what's in stock and want the best bang for their buck. Those of us who have more particular needs and are more tech savvy will go the BTO route for a custom machine. But I still feel that Apple should at least put in a 256 GB SSD like how they made the Pro 580 with 8 GB Video Ram as standard on the top spec stock system. I like that I no longer have to pay extra for the better card like people did when they went for the 395X option last generation.

You have a good point for about people that walk in and just buy a Mac. Back in 2013 I decided to by an iMac and just walked in and asked for the top of the line model they carried in store which was an i5 8gb RAM with 1tb HDD (non fusion). I was under the impression it was a Fusion. I don't regret it because I plan on install a 2tb SSD now (or buying a new BTO iMac).

I'm stumped

I can just about afford a 1TB SSD but good god, the price premium over the Fusion - £630 - is crazy! I begrudge having to pay that much

Thinking I might be able to do my music production on a 2TB Fusion (256gb SSD based) and buy a cheaper external SSD

Reckon this will see me right for 5 years? I want speed but not that much!

Go for the 256gb or 512gb SSD model and use external storage for your music production.

You reckon? I guess you're right - reading the samples off an external SSD over Thunderbolt 3 should be quick enough and definitely an improvement over my current 1tb 2012 fusion drive based iMac
[doublepost=1497901075][/doublepost]While we're on the subject, are those G-Technolgies SSD drives any good?

You got in early, ordered and now have received your iMac. Are you happy with your purchase? Any regrets? Wish you had upgraded the CPU, SSD or ___? What about fan noise? I'm particularly interested in whether your iMac is quiet or not and what CPU choice you made when you make that observation. If you were ordering again, what changes to your order would you make?

The rest of us procrastinators are waiting to hear from you brave early adopters!

Thanks in advance!
JayFromNoVa

Are you happy with your purchase? YES, F* YES

Any regrets? YES, I can't afford the iMac Pro, but besides that: NO.

Wish you had upgraded the CPU, SSD or ___? I have the i7, i wish i had the 2tb ssd, but i can't afford it, plus the thunderbolt3 40gbit should be promising for the future - ssd wise

What about fan noise? When i load a few games at the same time it kicks in, and it's louder than the 2009 imac, but it kicks in way less, even with 30 degrees C in my apartment (hot summer!) . .. i am ok with it. the machine is freaking quiet. just worried it has 1 fan for everything instead of 3 like usually .. hope it lasts 8 years

I'm particularly interested in whether your iMac is quiet or not : i can't tell if it is on, because the boot is black screen and no chime. so each time i am about to press the button again and then suddenly desktop. yeah, very very very quiet. no moving parts besides the fan. which i can NOT NO NOT hear at all when i have any game or youtube or vlc with 8K video or whatever playing. it's all fine.

and what CPU choice you made when you make that observation : i7 - highest model, 8gb ram (ill expand to 64 next year myself) and 1tb ssd, after paying import tax and for the apple logo, i paid just under 3600 euro for it.

If you were ordering again, what changes to your order would you make? Maybe the magic keyboard with numpad thing on the side, but it was 60 euro, argh, and the mouse i dont use, i have the logitech mx anywhere, so i rather have the magic trackpad 2, but it was another 75 or 120 euro, not worth it.. i have the first gen track pad and it's fine still. Maybe ill sell the new unused mouse and trackpad old and buy the new magic trackpad 2 with it, whatever.. I couldn't afford apple care, so maybe in a short bit or within 8 months ill pay the 175 euro for apple care to get a few more years.

i saved up two years to get this thing, and actually longer, but that saving process failed.. so i made a site to hold myself publicly accountable and get help from family and friends - and then .. apple doesn't release an imac until this year, LOL .. but whatever, it's here now, no regrets. the ssd is so nice and fast, 4k scrubbing in movie editing apps is butter smooth right now.

Shiny things and money do not come easy to me, and that's a personal thing .. so dont get me wrong: i appreciate this opportunity to have uch a machine like i dunno what .. wow.

External RAID's will be plenty fast too if you want high storage and redundancy (drive failure protection). I don't know much G-Tech SSD's, but they're a reputable company and no matter what external SSD you buy, it will be plenty fast for music production.

Another recommendation for an external Thunderbolt (not USB!) drive from me. I choose the internal 256 GB SSD together with an external SSD RAID0 for my 2014 5K iMac and never regret it. You can outsource many folders (like the homefolder) from in internal drive to the external drives with symbolic links, so the 256 GB will be enough for a very long time....

i7 4.2/ 40GB RAM/ 1TB SSD /Radeon 580

Ordered the Crucial 32GB kit (2x16GB) from B&H to take it from stock 8 up to 40GB:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1208371-REG/crucial_ct2k16g4sfd824a_32gb_ddr4_2400_mhz.html

iMac arrived today and it's the fastest computer I have ever used. My work machine is a fully loaded 13" i7 2015 MBP but I have been holding on to my 24" iMac Early 2008 with transplanted 512 SSD (Samsung 840) at home for what seemed like an eternity. This new iMac is a beast and the screen is so beautiful. I have to double-check that the task I asked it to do was completed because it happens so fast!

RAM works perfectly and I ran Apple diagnostics (hold D on boot) to verify.

Popped my Samsung 840 into a USB 3.1 Gen2 case and it's running faster than when it was in my old iMac as it was being held back at 3.0Gbps SATA 2 speeds. I used this case:
https://www.startech.com/HDD/Enclosures/usb-3-1-drive-enclosure~S251BPU31C3

Noise levels are negligible, I can hear the air coming out of my HVAC before I can hear this iMac during normal usage.

Do you have a windows partition? Would you mind using cinebench and while in windows and telling me your score?

sorry I only run windows under Fusion and I haven't set the environment up yet.
Ok no problem, I just know the scores are different (usually higher) when under windows so I'm curious. Thanks though!

Anyone with the base model 27" iMac able to do some benchmarks in Diablo 3? I don't intend to play any games on the machine except maybe Diablo 3, so hoping it can be played at a decent framerate with resolution & details up high...

Just received my i7 580 2Tb Fusion.
It's an amazing step up from my 2012 15" MBP. And it's super quiet at idle. Can only hear it if I place my ear at the top of the screen.
I'm a heavy Final Cut Pro user so will post a bruceX benchmark soon. Looking forward to see what the 580 can do in a fcpx context.

So it's achieving a 23 second BruceX export to ProRes422. Reading and writing to the internal fusion drive. Not quite as good as my old i7 6700K hackintosh sporting dual R9 280s, but it's a lot more reliable ;)
