Mr Brown just dropped off a very diminutive package - it's much smaller than I'd imagined!

Of course I'm stymied until I can get hold of a Micro USB cable. I wonder if I'm patient enough to wait for Monoprice or if I'll elect to get hosed over at Radio Shack?...

Do you have a digital camera? You might have a usb to mini usb laying around if you do :)

Plex developers would be far better of using AirPlay have the Plex server communicate with AirPlay then no converting on the fly would be needed then that would be a killa product. This is just some half hardy hack.

please... if you have no idea what youre talking about, why would you expose your ignorance like this?
airplay isnt gonna have the apple tv play unsupported formats "magically". if youre gonna play high bitrate stuff and unsupported codecs/containers, reencoding is a given, considering the atv's horsepower. also, airplay is limited to your local network while PMS also works over internet.

That's what I was hoping but alas it's MICRO USB which is the squished format that blackberry uses amongst others. I'll pick something up soon and get hacking!

I had some initial issues getting this up and running, but I solved the problems and it's working great. It's the whole reason I bought the :apple:TV in the first place -- now I can finally start using it!

more details! the plex forums are blocked for me at work and i'm dying to hear more about Plex on the ATV2. I have a macmini running plex on my bedroom tv and want to eventually share its files with a plex client in my living room to display on a 50 inch 720p tv.

Plex on ATV2 is good but not perfect. The UI is pretty cut and dry, shows you all your listings similar to how Plex on OSX. However nothing works besides streaming movies right now, but let me say this is an incredible plugin for the ATV2 and I love it to death. Below I will list the quick pros/cons of this device, but I am not ripping on the developer at all. This is just a what works and what doesn't work for those interested in installing.

Pros

1 - Plays every video I have tried (mkv, m2ts and avi)
2 - Quality is outstanding
3 - Shows artwork of video's

Cons

1 - Artwork is all you get, no other metadata
2 - No Fastword
3 - No Chapters, skipping just ends the movie
4 - No resume, always starts video from beginning
5 - Small lag of 5-10s before video starts maybe a little longer (not a very big con, but I am just listing everything.)
6 - No plugins, which this could be a while if its even possible.

Wow that sounds very promising. Just think if Apple ever creates an official App store so these types of apps can be done right and without jailbreaking. It's going to be GAME OVER. Plex on the ATV is awesome but I'm really looking forward to EyeTV being brought over. That would make the new Apple TV a definite cable cutter.

So Radio Shack wants $20 bones for a Micro USB cable. As much of an instant gratificationist as I am - I cannot bear getting hosed. Monoprice and a week's wait will have to suffice.

My RadioShack had a mini to micro ADAPTER for $14, and I bit. Hosed indeed.

Yeah I had the same dilemma and I ended up going with Monoprice. I am in TX and had it within 3 days. Definitely worth the $$$ and not getting ripped off by rat shack.

For saying it's just a beta this is very impressive. It has some real potential.
It will be perfect when it can send 5.1 audio, meta data and fast forward correctly.

Thanks! when you say only movies work, do you mean TV Shows wont work? or that tv shows will work just stuff like nextflix/hulu/youtube and photos/itunes wont work?

Sorry, Movies/TV Shows work fine. Netflix/Hulu/Youtube/photos/itunes none of that works. But I have Entourage Seasons 6/7 in MKV's and those play fine. Then I have other Movies in AVI/MKV's and those also play perfectly.

Does it play VideoTS folders?
I would like to rip my DVDs and not having to transcode it all on Handbrake and at the same time keep the Menu and extra features from the DVD intact.

I tried jailbreaking with pwnage 4.1.2 but it gets stuck at restoring apple firmware, at the end of the progress bar. Has anybody encountered this issue? how long does it typically take to jb appletv with pwnage. I really think I manage to do the impossible by bricking my appletv. if others can provide feedback on this, I would greatly appreciate it.

I have not tried a VIDEO_TS Folder, but when I have a few minutes I will.

I'm still struggling trying to get my AppleTV in DFU mode any tips or tricks for this?

I've followed all the instructions and tried it with PwngeTool and the other way - nothing seems to work - I can get it into restore mode but not DFU mode.

Ideas?

I did it. It is nice. The client needs more work. I was watching a movie and it errored out on me. No big deal except resume is not yet working so it started from the beginning. Ouch! But I am glad I did it and will be buying a second to do it again. Once the dev refines the client a little more this thing will be awesome.

You do have power cable and micro USB plugged in right? Many people did not realize u needed both so I will start there.

I did not have the power plugged in when I jailbreak'd mine. Just had the Micro-USB cable, pwnage tool, original apple firmware and had no issues.

Hi all, PLEX rocks, watched a few movies last night, 720p no problems at all.

Firstly, on getting your AppleTV2 into DFU mode I was also having a nightmare of a time. I was getting all kinds of weird errors when trying to put the built IPSW into the device. Here are my steps.

1. Power and USB connected, restore apple TV with iTunes, no JB just a fresh restore so you will get a fresh ipsw from apple, that will save in the correct location etc. Yes I know you can download from xyz, but thats what seemed to be causing my issues of not being able to restore correctly.

2. Once restored, pull USB, insert HDMI. Setup language on tv.

3. Pull HDMI, insert USB (leave power in)

4. Remove any ipsw you may have got for your ATV except the fresh one in your user/itunes/../ that apple used to restore in step 1.

5. Run Pwnage tool, once it has built etc, it will tell you to UNPLUG POWER! do so and follow instruction.

6. Once Pwnage tells you (yes it told me it was in DFU mode the first time too but it wasnt) option click restore, and choose ipsw on desktop.

Plex honestly is a huge step, is it perfect, no, but it really is usable, its very fast.

Bonus finding.... I have a few Macs and a hackingtosh too. anyone using a hackingtosh make sure Bonjour is working or Plex will not see any files and crash like no tomorrow.

Hope this helps some people.
