In the smaller version of it that seems to be it in some cases. The smaller version seems to be there more to get the day/date and a quick general overview to some degree. Not as useful in terms of the events themselves at times, and potentially can be improved in one way or another, but useful on some level for some (even if just to get the day and date) and has larger versions that have more details.

As a practical question -- if you have multiple all-day events (and it can only display one), how would it choose which to display?

There you go, the larger version can fit more information which is basically part of the idea of different sized versions of widgets.
Not at all. I don’t want a big widget taking up a massive part of the page. The right hand 50% of the big calendar is totally pointless to me.

Why can’t the small calendar show the same information as the left side of the big one?

Why must they make things purposely difficult.

But the small one has the day & date at top, reducing the room available for the rest... (if you're simply asking for the day & date to be removed, fair enough I suppose.)

With a little bit of thought and tweak in design I’m sure Apple could have come up with a better small widget than the one at the top of this thread.

They may as well remove the current text and replace it with “you’re doing something tomorrow”!

I will say this -- as a frequently disorganized person who has had to train myself to actually check my calendar every day, I have been looking forward to the day when calendar widget(s) arrived for my homescreen (I could never even train myself to swipe over to the Today page to see the widget there). I'm currently using all three versions of the widget, on different screens. I do wish they were a bit different / interactive (e.g., the big schedule widget was scrollable)... but as it stands, I am now confident that I will not be missing any appointments!

What is a real pity and in my opinion a massive missed opportunity is that these widgets can’t be placed on the Lock Screen.

Imagine just glancing at your phone and being able to see your next couple of appointments etc without having to unlock.

I agree with this!

My Pixel (work phone) displays the next upcoming appointment on the lockscreen (along with current weather) -- even this would be great to have on iOS.

Then there wouldn't be much space to prominently show the day and date which appears to be one of the main parts of the smaller widget.

As far as the larger widget the Roth side is to be able to have a quick glance view of the current month, which is one of the primary uses of a calendar in general.

Not everything will be what everyone wants based on how they use things. Short of just making everything customizable (which isn't really typical for Apple apps) and probably not that likely to happen, or might take some time to improve, it seems that the alternative is to perhaps find a third party app that offers new widgets that have more of the fitting information or are more customizable.

You can do it without unlocking now, but it would still require a swipe to get to the Today View to see the widgets there.

I know that

I realise I can swipe and see it but it’s not the same. The Lock Screen is a massive waste of real estate. Always full of the “other half”, the dog or the kid and nothing else. Huge waste especially for serious business users.

Disagree with your first comment. It would be easy to make the small widget work. I’m in design. It’s not difficult. Let’s not go round and round on the aesthetics. I want it. You don’t. Others might and might not. Let it rest at that.

Not sure where I said anything wanting or not, simply was commenting on the existing design and what changes might mean in relation to what's there.

In terms of the Lock Screen it seems Apple wants to keep it clean and mainly for notifications. That said the approach to that could change at some point similar to how approach to being able to place widgets on home screens has changed after a while.

Ultimately as is the case with most of these things it would be up to Apple to change them in some way, so not much any of us can really do about those things one way or another short of providing feedback to Apple and often enough finding something else that might work better as an alternative.
