Why aren’t the widgets interactive? Like why can’t I click on one of the days and find out what events are on it instead of it redirected me to the app itself? Might as well hit the app icon then.

What is a real pity and in my opinion a massive missed opportunity is that these widgets can’t be placed on the Lock Screen.

Imagine just glancing at your phone and being able to see your next couple of appointments etc without having to unlock.

I have found I need a half screen calendar widget or greater to have it be effective during workdays.
Other apps can do it. Why can’t/won’t Apple? It’s not they are reinventing the wheel ...

Not only are they wasting space, they don't always update.

Create an event on another device (with iCloud calendars) and there's a chance the widget will won't show it. It's even worse with third party apps.

I enabled background refresh for Readdle Calendars, ran the app a few times, and then created an event on my laptop. An hour later, not only didn't it show in the widget but the notification didn't go off as Readdle Calendar had no idea about the event.

The stock Calendar app did send a notification but even the stock widget didn't show the event for at least 30 minutes. Plus there's still the bug where the stock Calendar widget removes events 15 minutes after the start-time, regardless of the end-time.

Unless widgets actually update when you swipe to the screen showing them, they're going to become annoying and eventually unused.

Syncing and status have gotten worse over the last several months. I assume iCloud servers are the problem. It doesn’t synch notifications or the clearing of reminders. The iOS 12.x weather widget keeps telling me I’m in Puerto Leguizamo, which never happened prior to a month ago. I don’t have much confidence I’ll see any benefits to using these new widgets in iOS 14.

Wow, the complaining that goes on. Apple gives you something you didn't have before and you just puke all over it. Got it.

Widgets are not a case of reinventing the wheel. If you are going to do it, do it right.
Some things that Apple rolls out for iOS/iPadOS feel like they came from a college project class.

Apple: We are going to allow widgets to migrate beyond the today screen. HOWEVER we are also going to dumb them down.

Widgets display information. Apps are interactive.
I have plenty of interactive widgets.
This for example. Press different buttons to control various parts of my home alarm system.

Because they are widgets.
Ummmm my Tesla widget allows me to unlock, open the car, and turn on the ac right from the widget. When it gets update to iOS 14 standard it’ll make you go to the take you to the app itself. That’s a step back in functionality. Same with me thermostat app. Let’s change the temps right from the widget. So no widgets are not just windows to the application. They can be bite sized live app on the screen that lets you interact with the most important functions.

I think there is a difference between single-action buttons, or HomeKit-based functionality, and full interactivity. But in the end, if you wanna better calendar widget, use/buy a different one like Fantastical which seems to offer the functionality he requested.

Whats interesting is that Fantastical on my iOS13 iPhone can display more events than on my iOS14 iPad despite both still being OS13 "Today View" widgets. Probably has to do with there now being size restrictions to iOS14 widgets; on my iPad it displays 1 with a "View More" button that which launches the app. Be interesting to see what a native iOS14 version of the Fantastical widget will look like.

It's new functionality that doesn't work perfectly. Your argument seems to be that as long as it's new, it doesn't have to work well. My argument is that if we keep moaning they may improve it :)

My argument is that it may not work well so let’s cut them a little slack while they work to improve it. Go ahead and point out the deficiencies, but don’t call it “pointless” or “useless”, etc..

It’s better than what we had before (zero)!

And now you can’t swipe through the months, etc. Why make them less useful?
