The old one. Even though I've only seen tiny little pictures of the new iMac, I'm sure Apple has completely blown it, as usual.

I really like the aluminium look and the thinness, and I like the black surround to the screen. The thing I think really lets it down is the giant black apple – it seems a bit glaring and clumsy compared to the rest of the design. I'd have been more inclined to go with an inset, slightly different shade of aluminium

I completely agree. That would look much better. But I'm not seeing them changing it anytime soon since it's already in prodution so I'll just order it.
I still like it better than the previous model. Especially when viewed from an angle.
And finally no distracting white border when watching movies.

Slight changes from the design point of view. And this design has been there for years. Boring!

However the new hardware specs are really good.

There are some aspects of the new iMac that are very nice (i.e., the brushed aluminum finish), but the black rear and the glossy screen are definite negatives for me.

I just recently came from exclusively using PC's no more than 2 months ago, and the black seems so generic. The previous iMac had a very unique white finish. It was white, but with a clear superficial layer. It's hard to tell from the pictures if the rear is flat black, or if there is a similar treatment.

But the biggest negative is the glossy screen. My apartment has huge windows with a great deal of ambient light. I only use LCD screens due to the reduction of glare compared to other types of screens. This is the main reason I didn't get a plasma for my living room.

For now, I will stick with my 24 inch iMac (granted its only 2 months old). :D

From that side by side picture the newest iMac looks sad. It doesn't have that same bright, sunshine happiness the white iMacs do... but in other pictures (and probably in person) i find the newest release just beautiful. Either way it's really a minimal change. If you were in the market for an iMac, i don't see why this design would really turn you off enough to not buy.

yech

I hate the new design. The black makes it look like a distorted version of an HP Pavillion media center laptop. It seems apple is becoming more generic in their hardware, and I don't like it.
Ugh.
Like the aluminum though, but what's up with the black logo and border and back Apple?

It look slike they couldn't decide whether they wanted a black iPod-esque iMac, or if they wanted a brushed aluminum one, so they shoved both together.

I don't think so, I think it's following in the footsteps of the back of the iphone, as in, no clear plastic finish, I think the back will be the ugly black matte plastic of a Dell monitor. Well not quite THAT bad...

what happened to the white or pure aluminum computers we've come to know and love? I hope they don't do this to the laptops, as I had my eye on a macbook.

I completely agree about the glossy. I don't mind glossy for glare, but for color accuracy and reproduction, the glossy is not a good move, and will reduce possible sales to the creative industry. At least give us a choice!

The new one is gorgeous but I don't like the black border that much. I think it would look better w/ out it IMO.

the most beautiful i mac is the G3 byfar, i don't like the crt moniter but the styling is so much better, The new one does look more professional, but when i first saw it i thought it was Horrid. I think apple floped this one, they are know for beautiful design, but they took tho old one and wrapped it in foil. If i had the money to buy another one it would be the G5. Sorry Apple.

After having the white iMac for so long, I kind of got tired of it. When I see the white iMac and the white MacBook, it doesn't usually catch my attention.
When the black MacBook came out and the fact that it wasn't a glossy black but a dull black body, I didn't like it at first but I do kind of like it now (not like the MacBook Pro of course).

Anyways, I love the fact that the new iMac looks just like the iPhone, specially the back of the iPhone.

Just bought one from Amazon and can't wait to get it in the mail.

I am sure Apple did a research before they created the new design. I am sure people were in between the black and the beautiful aluminum Apple uses, so they used both (my opinion).
All in all I wish they would have done a drastic change to the iMac. It looks like the previous version but different colors (and thinner of course).

I thought it was going to look totally different like when the G4 and G5 iMacs were redesigned.

I think Apple (in the near future) will come out with a white version of the iMac, keep the aluminum but instead of the black, they will use white, who knows?!?!

I don't like the new one. It does look like an Apple computer. It is disappointing...

I think the black boarder is the things that wrecks it for me. I think it is good on the eyes when looking at the screen because it isn't distracting but I don't think it looks like a Mac. I like that it hides the isight camera, and that it is a glass cover.

I don't like how it is only glossy. I have a MB and it is glossy and that is ok because I always sit in front of it, BUT if I had a 24" screen in my house I am going to want to use it to watch movies. It is ok if I'm sitting back from it and watching a movie, BUT what if somebody else is there? They can't see the screen because they aren't straight on? I'm not saying that matte is better than glossy and starting that fight, but glossy can't be seen from all angles, and when you have a big 24" screen you don't want to sit straight in front of it all the time! It isn't a laptop where that is what you do.

I think it they removed the black border and back and made the whole thing aluminum then it would been better. It barely has any aluminum on it!! Only the edge! IT IS NOT AN ALUMINUM IMAC!!! They would of been better off making a black one or an all aluminum one.

Overall, Thumbs Down. I like the internal updates like the processor and stuff, but I don't want to sure it off. I like my MB because it is white, it screams APPLE! The new iMac doesn't. It looks like a stupid HP or Dell. At work I use a Dell monitor and it is aluminum around the edge and a black border.

The Keyboard is another thing. I like new keyboard. Some people don't, but as a MB user I'm used to the MB keyboard so I don't mind it. The keyboard looks like. The good thing about iMac is that they don't have a lot of wires. A power cable is all you need if you have a wireless keyboard and mouse and wifi. When I looked at the new keyboard I liked it, but then when I looked that the new BT keyboard I said to myself "Where the hell is the number pad?". IT DOESN'T HAVE A NUMBER PAD!!! WTF!! If you get a iMac you want a BT keyboard to keep it simple, and when you use a keyboard you want a number pad. BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE ONE!! AAAHHH THIS MAKES ME SO MAD!!! I WON'T BUY ONE FOR THIS REASON ALONE! The last BT keyboard has a number pad, why can't this one? Good job on taking two steps back! If I didn't want a number pad I'd buy a MBP!

I want a white 24"!!! I WANT AN APPLE COMPUTER! NOT AN iMac!!! I also want a blueray reader in it too... but that is a different story

I'm curious to hear anyone who can chime in who actually has the new iMac in hand regarding this... I see your point, but I'm not sure how bad this would actually be. Is it as bad as CRT televisions? We survived with those for decades, but they did have problems on sunny days, having to adjust the blinds and so on. And now, our LCD televisions are predominantly matte (mine is, anyway), and I've never really noticed an issue with daylight from the windows and my LCD TV.

Couldn't agree more! What could possibly spawn the idea that people do not want the num pad? Who has ever been thinking: "Ahh, I love my computer ... but if only it didn't have the num pad"??? It doesn't make any sense!!!

I am at a loss! Anyone, please explain to me why you don't want a full keyboard on a desktop computer?

The standard keyboard for the iMac is a full-sized USB keyboard. The optional Bluetooth keyboard omits the number pad, the idea being I think that you can work with it on your lap. Obviously this is not a foreign concept for most computer owners. If you want the Bluetooth keyboard but also need numeric entry, USB numeric keypads are quite inexpensive. Perhaps Apple should sell one that matches the iMac's aesthetic.

I get it: there are two versions - however I want a wireless fullsize keyboard.

My current full size wireless keyboard balances fine in my lab - and don't make this about my BMI :p I may not be athletic, but I'm not overweight (medically speaking).

The only place I want a undersize keyboard is on the sofa table, to run my HTPC. Surely the iMac is not a HTPC?

Do you know where I can buy a inexpensive BT numeric keypad??? Also I would like to match the new iMac keyboard so I don't look like an idiot using it.

If you see one around, let me know.

It's not a new design its just a change in color, the design is exactly the same.

I understand the reservations. For sure, Apple is trying something different. If these turn out to be unpopular choices, they might be forced to back-peddle and offer a full-sized Bluetooth keyboard.

I've never looked for Bluetooth numeric keypads. I know you can get USB for cheap though.
