Are you sure you weren't on WiFi?

I just started a YouTube on my iPhone (on EDGE) and called my iPhone number from my work phone, and it rang 4x and then went to voicemail. At no time did my iPhone display the incoming call.

I pressed the "HOME" button on the iPhone (to return to the main menu) and then called my iPhone from my work phone, and it rang.

I have said EDGE/GSM can support an interrupt. He doesn't have to be on wifi for it to support that.

He's right as far as the UMTS/HSDPA goes.

I'm certain I wasn't on wifi...I specifically turned it off to test it.

I just tested this on my iPhone. Calls don't come in and won't go on the missed call list!

This is TERRIBLE! iPhone is a phone first and ipod/internet/google maps second!

We have inconsistent test results. Can a few more iPhone owners please try the same test that Tazzy531, aristobrat and Merlyn3D did?

So why do none of the 3 iphones in my house ring when theyre downloading data?

Just because it rings doesn't mean it will stop downloading data - that's the interrupt coming in. If you answer - then see what happens to your data connection on the EDGE network.

If you are on wifi, it shouldn't drop the data, but if your on EDGE, and you answer - good bye data connection.

That's never true with smartphones. For example, techies, such as myself know that when they buy these devices they are not marketed as a phone. When was the last time you heard a phone company talk about what a great phone their PDA/Smartphone is? I have never heard anyone from RIM/Palm say "and it sounds great..."

They always talk about the PDA functionality. I always told people my Treo 700p was a PDA first, and a phone second.

Yes, it should be a phone first, because that's a critical function, but it's not. Apple clearly thinks of it as an iPod / Browser with a phone stuck on.

That's why it doesn't have dedicated phone keys for use in winter, or swappable battery, or a lot of normal phone options... and why you never see an ad with someone actually holding the phone up to their ear and using it.

And Codpet is pretty much correct. Combo device reviews usually spend about one sentence on the phone part. Sad but true.

Calls DO Interrupt Data

Hi,

I have tested this while downloading YouTube video and while opening webpage. The call comes in and the download is suspended while the call is ongoing. Download in safari continued after call ended. Works just as expected.

In theory, the phone should be too busy downloading data to monitor the incoming call paging channel.

So at least a couple of possibilities arise:

1) Your download was interrupted so much by other data users, that the phone was able to see the incoming call. That is, slower data transfer == more ability to see calls.

2) Apple actually installed two or more versions of the OS in the phones, and part of the data they're collecting from users is how well each version works. (This is actually what I would've done if I were managing the project.)

Ya I don't get why people are surprised by this. As someone else mentioned, UMTS (GSM 3G) is the only thing that will support voice and data at the same time.

BTW, my iPhone does NOT pop up a call alert while EDGE is actively downloading. I swear it has before. But I did do a RESTORE, and I don't remember if I saw the alert before or after the restore.

It apparently works for some people, not others

Some iPhone owners are reporting that calls do interrupt their EDGE transfers, though the majority are reporting that they do not. It is pretty weird -- is it the phone, the location, or what?
