My father is 82. I passed down my Mac Mini to him several years ago. He began to use email and loved the internet. (banking, news reading, recording golf scores, fantasy golf league, calendar, etc.)

His birthday was this month and so I got him a 16gb iPad. I was expecting to be constantly answering his questions but there have been very few. He sits with it in his lap as he watches tv each evening and surfs. I get emails now with the "Sent from my iPad" signature. The "touch" interface is excellent for he and my mother, who by the way, is using it anytime he puts it down. So, there is at least one "older gentleman" who is very happy and somewhat proficient. Here is his picture opening the iPad.

That's awesome! Your father looks great!!!

Cheers.

Why would one take the trouble to organize files put them in a folder, sync said folder to iPad then feel the need to delete a photo. Sometimes people don't think use cases through. Again consumption device and fast. Pics are brought over as indexed db and FAST I don't want to loose that so someone in theory can delete an image from a collection that should have been managed already.

Ok but I don't take the trouble to organize files into folders on the computer. I insert the SD card, press import, and then sync the whole folder without even looking at the pictures. I want to be able to then organize the picture in the folder on the go...so I don't have to sit in front of the computer at a desk anymore then I have to...I want to be able to do it from the couch or from the passenger seat in the car or wherever.

There are some annoyances for me. I noticed then right away. Things like trouble typing and jumping though hoops to handle files and attachments. I eagerly await an improved os but I'm not about to go back to my netbook. I think I made a good investment and when buying first gen apple stuff, that's not something you hear very often.

I've been noticing popups that say "connecting" when I'm in the middle of doing stuff online. My iPad freezes up for a few seconds with the screen dim. Boy am I glad I bought AppleCare. I dont always get applecare but on a first gen device it makes sense. I'm also glad apple promised os 4.0 will be a free upgrade when it arrives.

Frustrated, but NOT fed up.

I am definitely not fed up with my iPad and I can't think of anything I would replace it with for around the house use. But last night I was ~frustrated~ with the iPad. The way it kept reloading and reformatting the safari loads was getting to be a pain because I would try to click a link, and the page would 'jump' and it would load a link above or below what I was clicking. It was also becoming a pain to fill out a form to check room rates at a hotel site (not flash) because the pop up calenders kept moving and were small so I kept hitting the wrong date, which was really annoying. Suppose both of these could be solved with patience and zooming, but it was really getting to me.

Thanks for sharing such a great Pic/Post.

That is a happy moment, congrats.

Have you tried Atomic browser? It fixes the tabs issue but it will reload a page after you quit the app and relaunch...so I guess pick your poison. :)

Awww bless your 82 yr old dad! He's lucky to have a child like you.
I don't care who criticises me starting this tread, it was worth it to see that wonderful picture of your grandad. Hope thats me in 35 years or so

Will give it a try. One thing I am looking for (might be on safari, but couldn't find it) is to NOT jump to the page when I open in new tab / window. For instance, browsing a message board like this, I like to open a bunch of threads in new windows / tabs then go browse them.

Yes, Atomic lets you do that. You have to hold down on the link and a pop up will appear that lets you select to open in a background tab. The tabs are also at the top and always visible (if you choose) so you can quickly switch between tabs like on a desktop browser. Its great because you can start to load a page, switch to another tab while that one is loading, and go back to it when its all loaded.

Fed up? Hardly. Just scratching the surface more like. As soon as MacJournal releases and iPad version it will become invaluable at work for me. I'm not a content producer in the work environment, I'm a resource. A major part of my job includes me being an expert on two different 1000+ page documents, plus about 300 other smaller procedures. Those documents pretty much have to go with me every where I'm needed and the iPad is a much more elegant reader solution than a laptop.

Actually, I was hoping to do my organizing on my iPad because I like the feeling of swooshing photos around with my fingers like I would on a light table. Now I have to delete my photos until I have time to arrange them on my MBP. :/

Other than this, I completely dig my new iPad. If I were to do it all over again I'd probably get the WiFi + 3G version though. My iPad feels a bit hamstrung when not connected to the internet.

I love it. I have had it for two days now and took it to college with me today. It rocks! I have a note app and took notes, in perfect hand writing aka type. It is small enough to not distract like a laptop does when sitting behind someone and also it was cool to use wikipedia to go along with the class topic, gaining a little more insight on the subjects at hand.

I have my stocks set up on bloomberg which is an awesome app. We Rule is addicting as heck. iBooks is awesome as well. Epicurious is amazing. Place it in the kitchen and use an almost unlimited reference guide to cook with. iStudiez Pro is the greatest app for school ever created.

I can't wait to find some other apps that blow my mind.

P.s. This was typed on my iPad.

I still love my iPad, but I find myself compulsively checking for new apps! I think it will grow in usefulness as more apps come online that take advantage of the form factor. I still have a few iPhone apps that I am using on it and I really hate the jaggies. I am hoping that most developers will make universal versions of the existing good iPhone apps.

I find that I use it quite a lot. In fact I try to use it as the default, but if something becomes at all tiresome or difficult, I immediately switch to my MBP or iMac. I also find that some things are still much better done on an iPhone and there are a lot of places where I'm not going to carry the iPad. So, I have taken the approach of using each device for what it excels at. And really, that is what the iPad was for me; a device for someone who can afford to spend the money to have multiple form factors to specialize on doing certain things better than other form factors.

I bought a 16 GB one 2 weeks ago, and so far I love it, but there are definitely things that annoy me:

- I bought it primarily to watch videos in bed and my most used apps are Netflix and AirSharing, by far. They're great, but the screen is distractingly glossy a lot of the time, and has occasionally made a few very dark scenes impossible to watch.

- Safari doesn't cache open pages, so they frequently have to reload when switching between them.

- Of course, there's the well-documented WiFi issues.

- I really wish 1Password was a browser button on mobile Safari.

- I'm still not great at typing on it, and holding it for long periods of time can be awkward. But this is obviously a personal thing and not necessarily a fault of the device.

Some of the things that are 'limitations' I have actually come to appreciate. Without multitasking, I pay way more attention to the TV and movies I watch. Without tabbed browsing, I actually read the articles I open up in new pages. (Then again, I have ADHD, so maybe this won't apply to you!)

Would I buy it again? Probably. It was an impulse purchase and I happened to be able to afford it. It's definitely changed my computing habits: my MacBook stays hooked up to its external monitor, and when I'm sitting at my desk it feels more like 'work mode.' Browsing on my iPhone seems ridiculous now.

Kate, do you know about the .99 Tabbed Web browser called the Atomic Web Browser? There is NO annoying cache, full tabs, AdBlock, customization that safari lacks and you can identify your browser as IE, Firefox etc for Full web pages. :)
Atomic Link

Been using it too... If safari could have the functionality on the iPad it has on my Mac, it would be great.

I still love the device, and I got it on launch day. It really is the best device for email, web, music and video. Steve was 100% on the money with this thing. Yes, I still use my MacBook, but lately I use the iPad much more.

My online problem with Atomic browser is that for some reason on some online social networking websites when you click on someone's profile it loads up saying that that person is not a member of the website. Can anyone think of a reason for this?

Then you may wnt the camera kit. This will allow you to load photos directly from the card delete as needed and then synch them to the computer after culling them.

If you put on iPad from iTunes then you are not getting full size image and wouldn't want to sort that way. But again you can directly load from card and delete that way.

I am getting really fed up, and pretty scared too.
This thing follows me everywhere, tells me where to go, it's always playing video or audio at me while I'm lying in bed. The nonstop sending and receiving of the transmissions to and from only it knows really where.
It also copied my credit card number into it's brain to try to spend my money. But since it figured out that it cannot it has launched an all out campaign to influence me into giving authorizations for these fancy little programs he keeps calling apps. He says with the right compliment of these programs hardwired into his brain then we can ascend to the next level of greatness and authoritah which is spectacular and scary because I am scatterbrained and never get around to finishing any of t
