I can't get the black studio light portrait mode to work. Every time I try the photos come out looking like someone tried to create the effect in photoshop and gave up half way. Does it work better with certain backgrounds or light?

I'm sure it will get better as it moves along in beta.

But you can notice it, I just didn't mention it is all. There are a few places on your cute kids photo where the hair outline has been flattened by the masking attempt of Portrait Mode and there is also a section between the curly hairs that the blur has not been applied.

My opinion of Portrait Mode is that it's called a beta for a reason, it still has some wrinkles to be ironed out in regards to how it applies its masking to hair. Sometimes it's quite impressive, but more times than not it isn't.

Seem to me you expect the real thing achieved with big lens on a small lens on mobile phone, or you just trying to look for something to criticise. Not sure you're a glass half empty kind of guy or having an agenda, but you sure are not realistic. (from technology at the moment. With this speed of chip advance who know in a future)
Put that photo to anyone to see and they will never guess it's from mobile phone, even photographers (unless they're very anal). The fact that you didn't mention it the first time even though you were specifically talking about the subject says it all.

Btw, I read someone said in this thread that Portrait mode hasn't improved at all since it's still in beta. That's simply not true. From picture I saw from iPhone 8 Plus The blur is getting better.

Not at all, it's a camera with no movable aperture. I don't expect DSLR quality from it. To do so is ludicrous.

It's very noticeable on many images shared here on this very forum in other threads.

Why do I need to be criticised for having an opinion that it is still a "beta" feature right now, which will give you hit-and-miss results? o_O

I agree it gives hit & miss results, more misses in this thread of course (can't wait to get the X to test it myself. I may moan myself then lol). Still I expect someone with knowledge to acknowledge it when it's a "hit".
The good thing is the GPU power in our mobile phone is getting exponentially faster & faster and one day it could be able to get rid of even a tiny detail of irregular on masking. Let's hope so. From what I saw I'm quite optimistic.

To me a "hit" is it working correctly, with no errors, I am yet to see that in any images I have seen on any of the forums I visit. There are always noticeable flattening (harsh masking) of sections that shouldn't have had it applied, bits where the blurring hasn't been applied, or bits where the blurring has been applied and it shouldn't have been.

I can't help it if I have an eye for detail.

For a first attempt it gives much hope for its future. I very much look forward to its improvement over time.

Right now, if you play with it enough, eventually you're going to get some keepers! Working with a dark background seems to help it somewhat.

Oh, god. The portrait lightening is awful around the hair. Not your fault, but Apple. They really tricked us with that demo.

I wouldn’t call that a proper portrait. Too much of her body in the picture, maybe that’s why it didn’t isolate properly.
