My Baby (yes, another cat) taken in portrait mode on 8+, my very first time using this mode.
You’re almost never ever going to get each and every tiny little stray hair detail perfectly in portrait mode. You can not compare something done with optics vs something done in software. Optics will always win.
Here’s an example I took with a 5d Mark IV and a 85mm f/1.2 (@ f/1.2)View attachment 725725
A real lens will get that super fine detail of stray hairs (whiskers in this case) because it’s optically done, it can resolve that kind of detail, it doesn’t rely on masking to blur, it relies on physics of a lens, focal plains, distance to subject and aperture. iOS portrait mode doesn’t. It’s taking a best guess to mimmick it.
I love this! But seriously a Christmas tree already somewhere!?!
there are so many amazing photos in this thread!
in general, i'm very happy with the picture quality of the iphone 8, but there seems to be an issue with the camera of my device that i noticed in the past week.
basically everytime i take a photo of a (even just slightly) moving object/person, the picture turns out to be kind of blurry.
i have never encountered this problem with my previous 6s.
did anyone else notice a similar issue?

The cobwebs and weeds in your garden are shocking.![]()

The natural bokeh on the web one is stunning. That's not portrait mode. 2x zoom.
Why oh why is noise reduction turned on in good lighting? The water painting effect/problem is still there.
I’ve tried RAW in 3rd party apps, and while its a tad better in terms of noise reduction, the images are not as sharp as the native camera app. Its almost like it cant focus properly
