This is how I pictured saltwater maintainence!

I like to be prepared. ;)

I have many tanks running and I am always changing my setups. Currently I have:

45 gallon reef tank
75 gallon saltwater tank
55 gallon native tank
29 gallon freshwater tank
20 gallon freshwater Angelfish tank
20 gallon long "swamp" tank
And a pond in my yard that I keep native fish in.

I will be posting pictures of all of these eventually. ;)

Here is a video of feeding time in the native tank.

(Disclaimer: Live feeding means some fish ARE harmed in this video, don't watch it if you can't handle nature)

Some very nice fish in everyones, and some great aquariums.
I've got two goldfish with only one plant in the tank... so yeah, probably doesn't justify a picture :p

Wow, great video. What kind of fish are in those tanks?? It looks like they make quite the mess in there with the eating, does it take a long time for the filters to catch up with all the scrap?

The toilet and sink is a little much, but I agree about the coffee table. I think the first time I saw it was in a sky mall magazine. I wouldn't mind one if it was classy and easy to clean and care for. I imagine it's much better quality glass than your normal aquarium.

Why does that somehow not surprise me? :p

I just started cycling mine. I replaced my gravel with sand (much nicer) and I added some live plants.

Hopefully this one doesn't become a tomb like the last one did

Its still very bubbly, I only added the water today. No fish yet.

I assume you are goign to try the "fishless cycle?" If not, what are your plans to cycle it?

BTW very nice set up! Looks great. I always get the bubbles with water changes and those will go away when the water settles

Thanks! And yep I'm trying fish less. There were fish in there earlier but they all died the same night I put them in there (I thought I waited long enough on the water but apparently I didn't :/)

My shrimp stayed alive up until yesterday sometime then he too died. I figured a full water change, rinse off all plants, etc and start new.

So doing your first dose of Ammonia today then? Do you have a test kit to measure Ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates?

Yep I ordered one. It *should* be here today, if not I'll have to wait to start adding the ammonia.

I have a quarantine tank I'm going to cycle too. It'll be nice once I have fish in the tank :D

This will be my first time ever doing a fish less cycle. After reading more about cycling I felt awful knowing that using fish can burn their gills 0_0

Being patient is always the hardest part! Better to make sure the tank is fully cycled and healthy for fish to live in there instead of having dead fish on your hands all the time :)

I ask because I honestly have no idea, but what kind of regular maintainence is there for a saltwater set up, beyond what is needed for fresh water? I have talked to people and they say that salt water must be checked regularly because all of that stuff is very sensitive.

It's a LOT more demanding on your time. Water changes every 4 weeks or more frequently if you are required to do so. A whole array of tasks that are dome in sync with the changes.

Magnesium check
Salinity check ( weekly)

Skimmer and pump maintainence etc. I had a 240 litre tropical setup and the reef is WAY more work. I have it good really I get to look, but don't have the responsibility of the work!

Marine fish also cost anything from £10 to £ 150 depending on what you buy, so it's a leap in money too.

I hope this isn't putting you off the idea, just shows you the difference!

Colin (Ouachita Map turtle) having a chill in his tank, only a small setup for now whilst he/she's young :)

Temped to get rid of the rock I put in there though, give them more room to swim.

There's also some Leopard Danios in there, couple of orange/white fish and 2 gold frogs.

Very nice turtle! My cousin has a Map turtle that doesn't want to stop growing! If you want him to get bigger, make sure that you continue to get bigger tanks for him to grow into!

I have two large (30-60 gallon) HOB filters that are always running so that is twice the filtration needed for a tank that size. If it still needs more I hook up one of my Magnum 350 canister filter which can overturn that tank a good 6-7 times in an hour. Honestly though, the bullheads are good little scavengers, not much to look at but they really work hard.

Those are my Minnesota native fish (1 Northern, 3 Crappies, 3 Sunfish, 2 Bluegills, 3 Perch, and some baby Bullheads). The are housed in the 55 gallon only during winter months, otherwise they live in the pond I put in the front yard. :)

How big is that tank? 15g? I want to try a couple angelfish in my tank, but I'm not sure about my male betta. I've heard it's all luck if those 2 can get along.

Yeah I like to keep around 10x an hour on my tank, but currently I am introducing a new filter so I currently have two filters running and getting about 20x an hour . So needless to say my tank is pretty clean right now!

Well, it's like a child growing up (Map turtles have an average life span of about 30 years, so it's a similar (half) growth span as to a human.

He's got a 1.5ft x 1ft x 1ft tank at the moment, but I'm looking to upgrade this eventually to a 3 x 2 x 2.

I have the space for it, I just need to make sure that the shelf can take the weight of it.

its 16-20. (I think its 22?)

I have honestly had a lot of luck with angels (had 6 angels and 2 bettas) and never had a problem

Yup, you get attached to them almost like you would a child when having them for that long. My cousin's is in a 60G breeder tank right now and loving it. Don't know how much bigger he will get, but he's pretty big as we speak.

You can have a Northern in that small of a body with others? How often are you replacing these sunfish?!

He's grown up with these fish, I keep him plenty fat so there's no need for him to try to attack his tank mates. ;)

I caught him in a minnow trap almost a year ago. They were tiny (maybe 1", smaller than your pinky) but I could tell he was going to be something cool so I threw them in a tank. I caught 5 of them but only one survived (they are cannibalistic) but he has grown to about 10".

Depends what breed/gender it is; I know people with Female sliders which are 11"+ long (shell length). It's ridiculous, could not be bothered having a pond for them.
