Got back from a trip home to find one of my tetras that decided to get to close to the end of the filter intake sucked up.

I have to do some serious treating for my sick fish this week and plan on heading to the fish store to get some more rocks, plants and 6 or so more tetras to fill in the tank. I will take pictures with the updates later this week.

I was worried about something similar happening, so I took a piece of filter insert and cut a hole in it and stuck it over the intake. Nothing big going up that pipe anytime soon :p

Had to do the same thing for my shrimp tank. 20 red cherry shrimp arriving tomorrow! Time for some hot shrimp on shrimp action soon.

He's grown up with these fish, I keep him plenty fat so there's no need for him to try to attack his tank mates. ;)

I caught him in a minnow trap almost a year ago. They were tiny (maybe 1", smaller than your pinky) but I could tell he was going to be something cool so I threw them in a tank. I caught 5 of them but only one survived (they are cannibalistic) but he has grown to about 10".

That is ridiculously awesome. I'm big on outdoors and fishing, and general knowledge about these tells me that is not common. So cool how you are keeping them all together.

I have pre-filter sponges but decided against using them because those guys never would swim that low and the Cichlids are too big to get sucked up. Maybe i need to stick that on now.

Give him a few thawed frozen peas with the outer shell taken off for a few days; that will help his digestive tract. Are you doing regular water changes? If not, the nitrates/ammonia in your tank might be too high which would cause your fish to become ill. Also, don't over feed; feeding goldfish once a day is enough. I have a goldfish that frequently swims upside too. Feeding him chopped up romaine, kale or spinach at least once a week helps.
I'll post pics soon. :D

Went to the fish store last night and picked up 5 rummynose tetras for the tank :D. I also picked up another plant and about 10lbs worth of rocks. Rearranged the tank with a lot more hiding places. Everyone is still trying to get acclimated to one another, but this is the new set up!

Nice, starting to look more natural. That rock layout makes me want to make a Lake Malawi tank full of cichlids.

I got a new piece of driftwood today and a bunch of fish over the week. And I calculated how much I spent in total on this tank and it's appalling.. It's a horrible addiction.

I'm still cycling my tank :( No fish for me yet :(

Now frogs on the other hand...they arrive tomorrow and will go into their new home ;)

The waterfall is a bit ghetto but until I find a place that sells fake rocks it'll be that way :/ I don't want to put too many more real rocks in and compromise the weight.

Those are very cool! I have friends with snakes, turtles, and all sorts of fish, but none have frogs. How big with those guys get!?

They'll get between 2 - 3 inches.

I actually just had to bath one 0_0. He had coconut fiber all over him, which normally would be no big deal but it was all over his eyes and the poor thing couldn't open the one so I felt bad and dunked him in a small cup of water, now he's good to go.

Talk about spoiling your froggies hahaha. Next they'll be requesting a place at the dinner table

Had to sell mine before a move. :(

My new place only allows this dinky thing.

Oh no! That sucks :( Your new one is still nice though (and I'm sure the fish will like it better than the pet store tanks!)

Here is another shot of my pets inside their tank. He/she is sleeping and has coconut fiber all over them:

Hopefully within a few weeks I'll have fish to show ;)

He's brown because its actually night time in this picture. He won't be bright green until day time.

Very cool set up with the frogs! I'm interested in watching these guys grow.

What kind of fish do you plan on getting once you are all set? I had a rough fish week last week. Lost 4 fish, and I have no idea why and one of them was my largest Cichlid.. Down to 7 right now and frustrated with this expensive hobby

Remember this is a slow hobby, it is always best to take your time and not rush. It's never easy to lose a living thing but take it as a learning experience and try to figure out which parameters were out of whack. Just practice good habits and try to learn from your mistakes, best of luck!

Along those lines, I wasted to post some time lapse photos of my mixed reef tank.

I know it's not a fast process, but I feel like I know just about as much as I can about setting up and keeping a proper aquarium. My water parameters were fine, so I have my fingers crossed nothing is spreading inside my tank to the others.

Your tank looks amazing! Thanks for showing the progress you made over a year.

Keep at it, it is very rewarding. This is my third year with this tank (and my first fish keeping experience) and it has been a lot of fun.
This tank is not much; but still takes quite a bit to maintain.

This has not been a good year for my fish; 3 y/o beta dies, breading pair of angels die, 2 heaters crap out on me, and a filter breaks!

I know how you feel. When I first started, I was rushing everything too (and still do from time to time).

Finished my weekend project, ended up lifting the lighting 6" up to help fight algae and make water changes a little easier. About 5 weeks in now!

Thanks. A little too much of everything really... Hard to fight the collectoritis when you're first starting :p

Off the top of my head, I've got an amazon sword, water sprite, couple species of anubias, java fern, vallisneria, rotala, water wisteria, a crypt, and the hulking red tiger lotus that's slowly becoming a monstrosity.

As for fauna, 7 harlequin rasboras, a few oto catfish, some shrimp and a couple angelfish (by the time they grow big, I hope to move and get my hands on a square tank ~70-100 gallons).
