You know I thought the same thing about projectors until I was able to see a decent projector in action. My bedroom only has one window and I usually like it dark so for me it works out great. When I close my drapes the picture is phi nominal. There is a 'living room' mode which allows me to watch during the day but it uses bulb life faster (2500 hours vs 4000 hrs).
The screen was purchased. Its an Elite Silver Screen (100") I tried to rearrange the room to get a 120" but it just wasn't working!
It's plenty either way. It wasn't that expensive either. The projector and screen cost ~ $1600. Of course you need to add in the cost of a receiver and speakers.
