adium is used for stuff like msn. icq, yahoo, google talk etc; where as ichat only works with AIM, .mac and mobile me

He does, he was curious as to why lots of people use Adium

Adium has tons of skins as well and is fully customizable, whereas ichat you're pretty much stuck with the default skin. Also it has a cool setting to where you can hide the contact list off the L or R screen and it pops out with mouse over. Plus as has been said before, it offers more compatibility with IM clients. I use AIM, Yahoo!, ICQ, and .Mac through one app. It's just what works for me, plus my connection is too slow for video chat to be viewable anyway.

Here is my dock.

For the most part Safari, Adium (or iChat, it changes each month), iTunes, Mail, and iCal are ALWAYS open. Then I've got CS3 for school. If I ever need anything else I just use the Spotlight command and use it like Quicksilver.
