I agree with you on your comments about the car. It is a great car. But I personally could not drive it every day (maybe I'm just too old).
For me the E46 M3 has just the right balance of high performance and practicality to make it an ideal daily driver. I can take it on road trips with my wife, drive it to/from work and the store, and run it at the track on weekends, all without making any changes -- it's great in all these cases. Honestly, I'd be happy keeping it until it self destructs from age, but I will test drive the new M3 Coupe when my dealer has one with the double-clutch gearbox.
Definitely agree about the Lotus. I'm in the 18-25 age range and there is no way you'd catch me driving one daily, wayyy too barebones and definitely not the ride and features I want driving to work everyday. I'll take huge padded heated seats, a nice paddle shifting tranny, and more forgiving suspension anyday for my daily commute.
I'm with you on the M3, the E46 is a sweet car, my dream car that I may be able to actually afford in the next 5 years is one of the new M3 coupes or maybe a 335 convertible depending on where I'm living.
Saw an Audi R8 for the first time today as well, very sweet car, even nicer in person.
