Canada EH!!!
All the major companies make decent wedges, so you should definitely try as many of them as you can. That being said, I (and a lot of people I know) have Titleist wedge preferences. I think their wedges are just a little bit better than all the others. The Spin Milled wedges are great and they look really nice at setup as well. I'd recommend them. The BV 200's are great as well, I played those before the Spin Milled wedges came out.

My club should have some demo days early in the season. I was thinking about buying something on sale during the winter. However, I think your right and I should give a couple different clubs a good try before spending all that money.

Cheers.

Oh yea ... Take it from basedloaded the "maker of golf clubs". Callaway is crap. Nobody uses Callaway clubs any more! They are guaranteed to break and injure someone in your foursome when the heads come flying off. All the pros on tour use them to hold up their rose bushes. Nobody gets multiple hold seasons out of their Callaway clubs! If you do, your lucky and you should count your blessings. What a joke! ;)

Cheers.

im glad you quoted me accurately. because that is exactly what i said. Do you have the slightest idea of what the club making process is? All i said was that out of all the repairs that come in to our shop about half are callaway, thats all. But go ahead and take it the wrong way because im sure you use them anyways.

Thats what I would do. Wedges are a pretty finicky area when it comes to clubs. I hit everything before I make a purchase. I figure I'd rather spend an extra $100 on a set of wedges I like, than purchase a set without hitting them, return them, and then spend another $200 for another whole new set. That being said, once you find a brand of wedges you like you can probably purchase within that brand of wedges without demoing. My first wedges were Titleist 200's, a 56.08 and a 60.08 I think, I demoed those. However, when I bought my most recent wedges, Titleist Spin Milled, a 52.08 and a 60.04, I just took a look at them and purchased them, they're really similar. Same usually would follow with Callaway, Cleveland, Nike, etc wedges. Wedges have probably change the least of all clubs.

Thats surprising to me. I never was a Callaway fan but I've never seen anyone have problems with them (other than those crappy Unisex shafts, reshaft with Project X's or DGs and your good to go). I've never had a problem with my Big Bertha 2004 2 iron, but I had its a custom order at .5 inches over length and 2* upright. Their X-Forged irons are really sweet. Maybe not up to par with some of the other forgings out there but still pretty good from a feel stand point. I used to play with two of the top 100 juniors in the country, they both played all Callaway. They went down to the fitting center in San Diego numerous times, always came back with some sweet free sticks, Callaway even sent the golfballs, wish I had that deal. I did get my 690s at cost though, thanks goes out to my teaching pro for that one.

I will say, at the last club I worked at, we were a big Callaway account. We never had TONS of problems with Callaway stuff, but I will agree, they did have the most problems.

Most of their metal-headed clubs were fine, aside from the occasional face cracking, which is SO common now a days with companies going to thinner and thinner faces. But starting with the C4 in 2002, basically every composite club they've sold has had some failure or another show up, and not in single occurrences. Faces caving in on C4s, the weight chips inside the Fusion coming loose, the entire back composite part of the head falling off. You name it, and it's probably happened.

Granted, the composite head thing is still kind of a "new" idea, sort of (Cobra Ultramid anyone?). So, its understandable that they would have some issues here and there. But, the frequency that we would see them was kind of shocking.

Everything else from Callaway, and pretty much all the big name manufacturers, was pretty good. We only sold Titleist/Cobra, Callaway, TaylorMade, Ping, Cleveland and Mizuno, and all had their small issues here and there (again, aside from composite Callaway stuff). Nothing crazy, just the usual stuff like loose heads, cracked faces, unintentionally broken shafts.

I will say in their defense, Callaway is, in my experiece, one of, if not the best company to deal with when it comes to repairs or problems. Very rarely did we ever get told something wouldn't be fixed for free, even if it wasn't entirely their fault. And when things did need to be sent in, they were back to us VERY quickly.

Personally though, I think a lot of the issues people have are self-inflicted. Maybe I'm just lucky, I don't know. But, what I do know is that I keep very good care of my clubs, and I can't even remember the last time that I had anything break (that I didn't do myself). Leaving your clubs in the trunk to roll around, not putting headcovers on, not making square contact with the face, and so on. If people in general would just take better care of their stuff, I think they would be pleasantly surprised at how much better it looks, and how long it lasts.

I agree. The few times we actually worked with Callaway they were great. We usually do our own repairs for people that bring in their broken clubs, and trust me there isn't anything that I haven't seen. Also like you said before, more likely than not it is the user that breaks the club either on purpose or just by not taking care of their clubs. People, don't leave your clubs in the garage over winter!!! lol So often i see a set come in for new grips or shafts and the shafts are nothing but pitted and rusted due to poor care.

Oh man, the C4, I remember the problems with that club. If you owned one and didn't cave a face you were lucky. And the sound, man was that an interesting thwack.

Glad to hear Callaway is good with club problems. I've never dealt with them on that front, but they were very quick on my custom order.

I think a lot of club problems are due to poor care as well. Never, never leave your clubs in your trunk, especially if its very hot or very cold. Just take them out and put them in your room, spare room, closet, whatever, it only takes another minute and will save your clubs a lot of problems. I've had my 690CB's for a good six or seven years, never had any problems. Granted, the grooves are starting to wear (especially on my 7 iron) in spots where the ball make contact most often, and the grinds on the sole are pretty worn, but they're completely playable (in fact they're probably better, they're now "custom ground" for my swing, haha). I've replaced a few broken shafts (back when I couldn't control my anger I hit my bag with a club and broke the shaft of a club inside the bag, etc), changed the grips due to wear, and had the lie angles redone (which my local store did for free), but they're still great clubs. In other words, I haven't had any problems that wouldn't be expected when you hit 100,000 golf balls in 4 years. All I do is keep them inside, never leave them in my car, and clean them every few rounds, its easy to keep your clubs looking and playing great for a long time.

...and clean them every few rounds
No way, I could never do that. My cleanliness OCD would kill me. I take a wet towel with me every time I play, and wipe down after every shot. Serves two purposes. I don't have to clean them later, and then every time I go to hit a club I know its clean. But, that's just me. HA

And, now to get this thread back SOMEWHAT on track....

After all this golf chat the last few days, I was just messing around in my bag earlier tonight and found this....

ballshe5.jpg

Inside a sleeve of old ProV1s I found this. It is a brand new ProV1 with no markings. No brand stamp, no numbers, and no side-stamp. Kind of weird. This was from a retail sleeve, not a hand-out from my old rep or anything. Kind of cool really. I'm keeping this.

The other one I just threw up there to show. Its one of the fitting balls that Titleist use when they put you on their launch monitor. At the time, they were using Vectors, but I'm guessing these days everyone is using the Trackman. Either way, I like this ball. Its just a normal ProV1, but with their printed on tracking spots.

Anyone else have any cool oddities like these?

that's a pretty cool find. I have myself a collection of pro v1's from just about every exciting place i visit or golf tournament i go to. I usually buy a sleeve and put one up on the wall in the case, but i never have the courage to hit the others.

Out of curiosity, what are you charging for a set of Ping I'series irons??

Depends. The eye 2 series I could probably still sell 150-200. the eye 3 I could easily get $200 or more. Keep in mind though that we sell are sets that have been refurbished so they are like new( total restoration of the head, new shafts if need be, and new grips if requested)

Mmmm Ping Eye 2's. I believe I sold mine for about $175 six years ago, unrestored but in decent shape. Killer clubs, amazing for 20 year old sticks. I've still got the sandwedge sitting in my closet, its a nice club, but I like my Vokeys better. Problem was my Eye 2's were given to me and were about 3 degrees flat. With a 2 degree upright lie angle I was having some problems hitting those well, much easier to hit clubs that are perfectly fit.

that sounds about right. People love their pings. I have never played much with them, but those who do are loyal customers and rarely get rid of them for something else.

I still have my old set of Beryllium Eye 2s. They are in a box in the basement of my parents house. They were the original square groove model. I had them refinished, adjusted, reshafted with some DG S400s, and regripped about 6-7 years ago. Like you guys mentioned, I just can't stand to part with them. They are great clubs, but this model of Eye2 is extra rare and special, so it would be silly to get rid of them.
