My gear minus the foot wedge. TaylorMade whatevers, King Cobra II irons, Cleveland CG 12 wedges, putter of the week:

wow you got the whole burner wood line up there! How do you like them? i thought the burner is one of the longest drivers i have ever used, its a shame though that taylormade wants people to think that they can hit that driver further, but in reality that shaft is an inch over the standard length, which WILL give you more distance, but less control.

Got a thing for the TaylorMade's I guess. The driver has a Fujikura 757 stiff shaft, love it! The shaft helps with the control big time. Had a gen. 1 Sasquatch before and hated it. Imagine I needed a stiffer shaft with the Nike but wound up giving it away.

The rest are all standard graphite stiffs. The driver gives me an extra 5-15 yards. Couldn't handle the R7. Straight up Burner is my ticket.

One thing that taylormade has always done right was put a high quality shaft into their high quality drivers. Picking the right shaft can be the hardest part when buying a driver. Most stock shafts will be fine for the majority, but if one were to be looking at an "aftermarket" shaft, there is so much to consider before choosing one.

Yes they do. Anything from TaylorMade that is from the TP line will come with a great shaft. Granted, that's why the drivers are $600+, but you get what you pay for. The shaft is much more important than the head, so paying a little extra to get a good shaft is fine with me. And now a days, with more and more companies moving away from "OEM" shafts, and installing more "Upmarket" shafts, it only helps.

It wasn't long ago that basically Titleist was the only company that would sell a driver off the rack with a custom shaft. But, go in any shop or store these days, and practically all you see are the green NV, the yellow and black V2, the red OZIK, and so on. It's good to see. Even if those shafts aren't SUPER high quality, they are better than the crap we used to get stock.

I've had 3 TaylorMade TP drivers, and all have been fantastic. I had the original R510TP with a TP 757 Speeder. I had an original R7 TP with a TP Diamana Blue. And I have my current SuperQuad TP with the stock Re-Ax TP Rombax. I did hit my old Titleist 905S with a Fuji ZCom BW65 a tad straighter, but no where near as long. The SuperQuad is very straight, but that 905 was like a frozen rope. Didn't get much distance, but it was laser straight.

Although i do agree that you get what you pay for, 600 or more is very steep for those drivers. i know that those shafts that they are using are not $200 or more. I think maybe $500 would be a lot more reasonable, seeing as though you can take a normal Taylormade driver and swap shafts for far less than $600. Even the top of the line speeders, or fukikuras, or aldilas, can be had at a better price.

I disagree. I mean, I know you deal with shafts and all that, but the shafts that they use in the high-end TP line of clubs are the real-deal high-end Fuji, Mitsu, GD and Aldila stuff. I mean, I know that cost on those shafts is not $300 or whatever, but some of the shafts they use retail for like $300-400. So, that's not so bad, really. I mean, if you were to buy the new Ozik XCon 5 that everyone is using these days, that is a a $400 shaft at retail. So a $500-600 driver with a $400 shaft is a decent deal.

This is by no means the cheapest place, or the only place, but this website has a lot of the high-end shafts that the big companies use, and you can see the retail prices they charge. I've purchased a couple shafts from them before, and they are a good site....

http://www.tourspecgolf.com/proshop/index.php?cPath=56&sort=&filter_id=27

That is just sorted to show the Fuji stuff, but you can hit the drop-down and see the other brands. The slightly older Diamana Blue that seemingly everyone uses now is still $275~ retail from any normal vendor. Add that to a $200-300 driver, and you now have basically a $500-600 driver. So, the TP stuff is just fine. In my opinion, obviously.

I tend to agree with this, a fairly high end (Speeder 757, etc) runs what, about $250-$300? So you've got either a $600 club with it pre-installed or a $400 club + $250 to have one installed. So I feel its a decent deal, not that I'd buy one anyway though. I remember when I had my 983K reshafted with a NV 75g, cost me about $100 (this was right when the shaft came out); Titleist then promptly decided to sell the 983 with an NV in it, bummer, coulda saved $100. Oh well, I prefer the 75g to the 65g Titleist was putting in stock anyway.

Mmmm Tourspec, I always wanted to order a shaft from them for my driver, never could justify the cost though.

i guess both of you are right. i looked at prices and the average price for a nice shaft like the new 757 retails for about $275. I guess im used to ordering in large numbers and getting better prices. For the average consumer than a Taylormade superquad with something like a 757 in there for $500 or so isn't that bad after all. Just better hope you can justify spending that, and don't expect your handicap to drop from 23 to 13 because you buy expensive equipment..lol

I've had these for two years now. Great clubs.
I also use an original Ping putter as well (ping). Plus I have an Adams tightlies 3 wood and bargain basement sandwedge and lob wedge. These, plus my driver d'jour get around with a 14 handicap.

Oh yea, good old "Mean Green". I had basically the same setup, but I had the 983E. The E was such a good club. I had that one for a while, then sold it to a friend to get one with slightly less loft and the GDI Purple Ice. Another great shaft that is now basically a throw-away. Oh how times change.
Mmmm Tourspec, I always wanted to order a shaft from them for my driver, never could justify the cost though.
Yea, they are pretty good. I mean, sure, if you dig around you can find the shafts cheaper from some fairly legit vendors on eBay, and other places. But, these guys are AWESOME, and the service is great. I got both the Fuji ZCom and Diamana White which I previously used from them. Both were shafts that you can't get here in the States, but were barely more expensive than a normal one retail here. The ZCom was a weight/flex combo that Fuji USA doesn't offer, and the Diamana was the Japanese-only "Ion" finish. Looked like black steel, and looked ACES in my old 905S. But yes, TourSpec is a fantastic place.
Just better hope you can justify spending that, and don't expect your handicap to drop from 23 to 13 because you buy expensive equipment..lol
Currently at a +1.4 so I'm not expecting much movement. HA ;)

I'm looking at breaking 90 semi-consistently next year. I mean, without using my trusty footwedge.;)
I should probably explain that in more detail. I'm currently 30 years old, and have been playing golf for 27 years. My father is a Class A PGA Professional, and currently the Director of Golf/Head Professional at a country club in Kenosha Wisconsin. So, I grew up with a teaching pro in-house. I've basically been in the golf business my whole life. And, up until about 3 years ago, it was also my job. I was working as an Assistant/Teaching Pro at a club here in Omaha since finishing up college.

So, don't get too spooked by the + handicap, though I did have it down to a +3.1 at one time. I have many years of hard work and practice to get there. Just stick with it, and those scores will drop. Without getting into too much personal swing stuff, I will say, work hard at your short game and putting. Having a reliable short game and consistent putting will save soooo many strokes over trying to hit the ball straighter or longer can ever do.

I hear you. Short game and putting is the key. I'm 50 and didn't touch a club until I was 24 so I'm way behind the curve there..

I can get within 30 yards of the green on a 580 par five in two and walk off with an eight - really. 3-Blade it over, 4-freak out cause I bladed it & get under it but divot goes further then ball, 5-next shot a beaut but rolls to edge of green, then three putt. +3!!

But I'm a true masochist when it comes to the silly game.:D

short game comes down to feel. you don't necessarily have to have the best mechanics when it comes to the short shots, you need to be able to feel them within your hands. I think the toughest time i have is not committing to the shot i know i need to take. you get up to the ball and start second guessing yourself. Then you take a half ass swing, and your results are nothing like you wanted. So pick the kind of shot you need to take and do it, don't second guess, just stand over the ball fully committed to what you want to do.

Yep. Aaron Baddeley is the best example of this that I can think of. With all his shots, but most importantly his putting, he stands behind the ball, visualizes the shot, steps up, and just hits it. No waggles, no extra looks at the hole, nothing. Step up, hit it. It's a great strategy really.

that's who i was thinking of when i wrote that. Not like sergio who used to take 5 mins to hit a shot. John daly does the same, he's not the golfer he once was but see the shot, hit the shot, don't psych yourself out

im trying to guess your irons. they looked well off-set and the hosel appears as though it is in the shape of an older King Cobra set. The Number stamping on some of the irons though make them look like a Taylormade set, the ferrules though make me want to think Cobra cuz they look gold from the picture. Let me know if im close or way off! :D

haha, it'd be hard to guess my set since it's actually mixed. I originally had 3-PW Macgregor irons (they were my dad's beginning irons before he moved to Callaway X-20s). Once he got hybrids, he no longer needed his 4 and 5 irons, so I took those. So what you're looking at is a 4 and 5 Callaway, 6-PW Macgregor.

New TaylorMade Clubs

I just got these clubs.... I haven't been able to hit them yet. I worked out a little trade with a guy that I met through work from TaylorMade

These are all custom fitted. Custom grips, shafts, and lie angles.

Driver: TaylorMade Tour Burner TP
Hybrids: TaylorMade Burner rescue (3, 5)
Irons: TaylorMade r7 cgb max (3-pw)
wedge: TaylorMade rac Satin TP 60degree
putter: TaylorMade Rossa Lambeau

I honestly don't have any loyalty to TaylorMade or anything... but i got a chance to get all of this so I jumped on it.

You could have done a WHOLE lot worse. Nice set! This thread's got me itchin' for some links time. Was 72º one day last week - but rainy. Oh well, a Florida trip in January seems doable. Blood Oranges will be in season too.
