Open backed headphones are not for 'in-home listening' only. As long as you listen at sensible volumes you have no trouble with annoying other people with your music.

Still the closed headphone from the Audio Technica line are very nice the A900 sound pretty darn good and are close so that you wont annoy people around you.

They are not one of the best, they ARE the best, Im aware of that. I just said they are ugly. Then again they are for in-home listening.

It depends what you're after, as far as I'm concerned I would have to say the top companies that make top headphones would have to be Grado Labs, Audio Technica, Beyer Dynamics and AKG.

I was harassed by a woman on a plane while using my HD595 because she could "hear my rap music". Open air is a terrible idea for close quarters listening when you have [fine ladies] nearby

AKG K-240 This have to be the most common headphones used in recording studios. Not hyper-expensive either. they sell for just over $100. The are "open" so they don't cancel noise well, best to use them in a quiet environment. But you'd have to spend big $$ to get htis sound quality in a close design. It is just technically harder to get good sound with cose design. Some people say it can't be done. But if you can use the open K-240 then $100 gets you close to perfect. AKG has been making these same headphone dor 30 year at least Bought my first ones in the early 1980's

Now that they're broken in, these sound incredible. They're very comfortable too.

I got these for my little brother for Christmas and they've easily surpassed my initial expectations of what they were going to be like. I actually have HD 595s and was thinking of getting some 280s for myself for when I need to listen to things in a quiet environment. Can't say enough good things about em.

Just got some Vic Firth Isolation Headphones for drumming. They reduce outside volume by ~24db. They really do a good job; I played with them on, and then played for a bit with them off and couldn't believe how much I was killing my ears without wearing them! Definitely worth it.

v-moda is fantastic! mine got broke after 6 months i called them and they replaced it superfast!:)

vmoda vibes, 1st gen. still going strong, though i would like to upgrade to some UE super.fi 5 pros. radio shack has some 50$ ue super.fi 3 lives or something close to that, i considered picking them up to try em out, but i feel like i'm too used to the vmoda vibe's sound signature now to warrant trying out possibly lesser headphones. i demo'd my buddy's etymotic er6i's and they are ok, they have very clear highs, but zero lows and almost non existant mids.

I'm planning to go pick up some SHURE SE110s with the iPhone microphone adapter tomorrow after trying them out at Macworld for my iPhone/general use. So far all the reviews sound really good and I was really pleased with the sound quality.

Does anyone have a suggestion for something better in the same price range? I've always been really happy with SHURE products, but am open to opinions.

These are the best all around headphones in the world. They could be a part of a geek suit, but they are cheap, comfortable, accurate, loud, and not fatiguing. I have close to a dozen pairs around the house and studio. I will post a pic when I get home. There are often several pairs hanging in the same place.

The only advice I have is that you get some gaffer's tape or black duct tape, and wrap it tightly around the bridge to prevent cracks.

You again... Now I don't want to get deaf or suffer from hearing loss but if Im listening to some good Infected Mushroom or David Guetta and I get "into" the music and blast it up then people will get mad. They are very very very good headphones designed mostly for in-home listening and are the best in their field. I enjoy good sound in a stylish package that will block out the noise outside and won't project sound; Bose gives me that in the QC2's.

I've been craving those headphones for a long long time now. They are on my list of first things to buy when I win the lottery.

I suppose by the time I could afford those they will be the omega 3s or maybe the 4s. Suppose I'll have to make do with my dt880s.

Just let her listen to them and she won't mind at all. I have a hard time getting my headphones back off her.
