A unique iPod traveling rig

I travel quite a bit -- about three or four flights a week, and my iPod Classic 160g with Apple Lossless files, Sleek W-1 wireless, Corda 3Move amp, and UE10 custom in-ear monitors go with me everywhere, since having access to the music I love is about the only way I can maintain some semblance of sanity on airplanes. So to carry all of this hardware I've invested in developing a portable rig housed inside an artful wood box. UE10s create the best noise cancellation possible on an airplane (puts Bose noise cancellation headphones to shame!).

Box is made by Don Boudreau Jewelry Boxes|Men's Valet-Jewelry Boxes|Tea Boxes|Keepsake Boxes|Exotic Woods and Burls) out of exotic hardwoods. I had the sides of the box engraved with line portraits of my favorite composers (I listen mainly to classical music) and I gold-leafed the engravings. I carry the box in a shoulder bag, so with the Sleek wireless and my UE10s (which I've modified to work with the Sleek W-1) I'm wireless whenever I'm on the go. Everything is mounted in foam, so it's all protected from the shocks of travel. With the UE-10s and Sleek wireless, the sound is as close to CD quality as a portable rig can get. Not having wires to deal with is a joy on an airplane.

Here are some photos of the results.

The Sleek W1 transmitter plugs into an output jack on the side of the box. The wireless maintains its full range (about 40 feet) with the lid of the box closed.

And here’s the Sleek W-1 attached to the UE10s (I’m likely the only person with a UE10 wireless setup of this kind).

By my calculations (all new):

iPod Classic 160g: $300.00
Sleek W-1: $130.00
Corda 3Move: $275.00 (outside of UK)
UE10: $900.00

Total: $1,605 without the price of the box and engraving

I would definitely say it is/was worth it on his part though...if you're traveling that much.

Actually, the iPod was a Christmas gift from my wife and the engraving was done for free by a shop where I take other business. But your estimate is close with the box costs included. I'm painfully aware of this cost, but in my book listening to the music I love on the road with superior sound quality is worth every penny. I've been to Paris, Normandy, Bourdeilles, Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Marrakech and all over the U.S. with this rig and it has never let me down -- the great composers and their work are always with me. I have all of music of Beethoven, Brahms, R. Strauss, Mahler, Berlioz and other composers on the iPod, as well as most of Joni Mitchell and many of the jazz greats - all in as close to CD quality as you can get with an iPod. I listen when I'm walking through airports, waiting for luggage, in taxis, strolling city streets, in hotel rooms, working out -- literally everywhere. And all without wires.

It's also quite a conversation starter on airplanes:)

Love the airplane iPod box, absolutely beautiful.

How noticeable is the drop in quality when listening wirelessly? Doesn't it sort of defy the point of such expensive headphones?

The Sleek W-1 uses a wireless technology newly developed by Kleer. It produces CD quality sound. In terms of audio quality it is far superior to Bluetooth.

So as is always the case, the weak link in the rig in terms of sound quality is the iPod, not the wireless system.

But the iPod, with uncompressed audio files, is not too bad, as this analysis by John Atkinson in Stereophile suggests:

The iPod's measured behavior is better than many CD players—ironic, considering that most of the time it will be used to play MP3 and AAC files, which will not immediately benefit from such good performance. But if you're willing to trade off maximum playing time against the ability to play uncompressed AIFF or WAV files, the iPod will do an excellent job of decoding them. Excellent, cost-effective audio engineering from an unexpected source.

Lossless files (which I use for all of my music) and the use of the line output (the docking connector) makes the iPod a pretty damned good audio source. With the UE-10s, Corda amp, and Sleek W-1, it's hard to tell the difference between my Marantz big amp and CD player at home. With Beethoven's string quartets, for example (I have sets by the Tackas, Emerson, and Tokyo String Quartets) you can hear the players breathing, string anomalies, and even fingering in some instances. It's quite amazing.

Sorry, but what is the point of using the amplifier to transmit wirelessly? Surely the Sleek uses its own built in amplifier to power the UE10s? You'd achieve the same results bypassing the dedicated amplifier, and having the Sleek transmitter plugged straight in to the iPod, surely?
