If there's a fire on a spacecraft in which there is a risk that everything including pens and pencils would burn, I would not be too concerned about losing a few $2.95 pens, presumably whatever was recorded with the pens would also have gone up in flames too - unless NASA also had fire proof paper?

I wonder how many spacecraft the Russians lost because of errant pencil lead/wooden pencil catching fire?

No offence but you have no clue what your talking about and I am thankful that people like yourself are not in charge of our space program. I can only imagine you would have said the same thing about velcro. The bottom line is they got rid of all flamable materials in the cockpit and it wasnt because of fear of losing them in a fire. Its because they become extremely dangerous in a high pressure oxygen environment and can actually cause a fire. The russians may not have had any problems using pencils but that doesnt make then any less stupid for using them.

Sorry but designing a pen that can work in space was without a single doubt a smart thing to develop. That of course isnt even speaking to the fact that they have made gobs of money selling them to the public after they were invented.

especially with the money aspect.
us space pen > russian space pencil.

Might get more to organize my old school stuff and archives but for now my taxes, receipts,bills will go here.

Also bought $40 dollars of groceries(fruits, juices, meats, spices) but with Ralphs rewards card got it down to $20 bucks. I was like YAY!
