Newertech Maximus RAID 1 external enclosure... Finally gonna move all of my movies off of my lappy HDD (nearly 1TB). It will have 2TB Western Digital "Green" drives in it.

Next purchase is a SSD for the lappy to replace the slowpoke 1TB drive.

Gateway NV series laptop. Nice screen and lightweight despite its generous 15.6" wide format screen and wide keyboard with numerical keypad. Nice Intel Core i3 processor and 4 gigs of RAM.

The only problem is, again, Windows. While it's said that "7" is better and easier to get around in than Vista, it's sluggish and when used on the same day as any version of OS X, and I can see why we all love Apple.

Some changes from XP made to Vista and 7 take some time to learn and MS makes it too difficult to do something that can be done in an intuitive way like Mac OS.

Many who use Windows are OK with it and simply don't know what OS X is all about and it's their loss. What a PC laptop with this post core 2 duo processor and lots of RAM have going for it w/o Windows is the reasonable price.

Oh quit it with your fanboyism. Windows 7 performs just as well as OS X. As someone who used Windows for his whole life until May, I can say that I'm still more used to Windows and can navigate around that operating system easier and quicker than OS X, so in my opinion Windows is more intuitive. The intuitiveness of an operating system is entirely subjective.

Nice essay. I have a windows 7 laptop, and a macbook pro and I quite like 7. Sure it is no OSX but it is not horrible either.

It is kind of strange that you critique your purchase. Just enjoy it man. Some people don't have any laptops/computers at all.

The biggest purchase I made recently is the cruise of the mediterranean I am going on in February. I've never been on a cruise ship and I can't decide if I will actually like it or not. I don't like overtly touristy stuff; I prefer to see the real local areas and do hikes when I travel versus going into gift shops and sites setup specifically for tourist. I think the engineer in me will really like the boat but the tourist inside will not. I couldn't pass on this opportunity because a bunch of my friends are all going; it will basically be a week long party together.

Picture is of the ship we will be on.

Smallville Season 7 (Blu-Ray)
:D

Love it! Bummed about the show ending because I feel they didn't develop the justice league quickly enough or extensively enough, there's still some question about things, but they've done a great job for the most part.

You got a point. I do enjoy it. You wanna know how I usually pay for this stuff? I write reviews on high tech gear, so I admit I got a little carried away with sounding like a critic. But I also fix gear, too so I did like the build of this laptop. It's pretty solid when you open the screen and the hinges are better than my old Compaq Presario which gave me problems. Apple has been excellent on this important aspect in laptops.

Anyway, I gave the laptop 4 out of 5 stars which was mostly due to great features and price ($499 street).

As for Windows, I really did like Windows XP a lot and if Microsoft came close to OS X or matched it, then it was XP imho. While Vista was not as terrible as some critics painted it out to be, I think it let down a lot of XP users. Windows 7 was the answer which is more like XP and less like Vista.

I am a fanboy, but only to a point. Many Macs won't get five stars from me, but I do like the Mac mini and 11" inch MBA for what they offer in their price ranges. I also wish the entry level Macbook Pro would switch from Core 2 Duo to Intel Core i3, even though the difference in performance bump is slight.

A Cruise is probably one of the coolest vacations you can take. To address your concern about off ship activities. Ask yourself, are you the adventurous type who is willing to walk off the beaten path to find the "local" sights or do you like to be more structured?

Don't sign up for any of the sanctioned shore excursion they are overpriced and the guides just want to take to you shops owned by their brother.

If you want to do something fun, wait till you get off ship and there will be plenty of vendors trying to sell you services, Scuba, Sailing, Fishing, Hiking Ect.

Check them out, haggle a bit and have a great day. Just watch the time. Last thing you want to do is that mad dash to the ship as its pulling away from port.

Pick up some of those behind the ear motions sickness discs from your Dr before you go. You may not need them, but you will be super glad you have them if you do.

And one last piece of advice. Depending on the package you bought drinks may or may not be included. In most cases when you board a ship you hand over a credit card number and are issued a ship card to make purchases. Its very easy to loose track of how much you spend on those things, especially on drinks as they like to tack on a tip and a service charge to each and every drink, order several at a time to avoid a million small charges.

Have fun, and consider me jealous.
