One year, we did decorative rock. They were called 'beach pebbles'. Two truck loads of them. After we were done hauling it all around, and spreading it out, I said it would have been far easier to leave the damn things at the beach (wherever they came from). That was damn hard work...

And now it's got to be all pulled up. GRR...:mad:

At our previous house, I moved about 22 tons of gravel... spread it out in the front yard. In Arizona, it's more common than grass... and it's back-breaking work... a great workout, but back-breaking work. And while we didn't "pull it all up", we did something equally frustrating (from a gravel-spreader perspective) — WE MOVED.

I did tell the wife, as we were breaking our backs starting to take it up: 'Wouldn't it be easier to just move?' She did pause for a long minute. I almost won! It's on the back burner now. It's just too damn hard.

I could use a couple of loads of that. Truckloads, not wheelbarrow loads.

that is one “load” - I don’t speak the local language so I have no clue how much it is, just that it’s not measured the way they measure smaller loads - which is cubic meters.

there’s two more (so double that much) of gravel and two loads of sand the other side of the hedge you can barely see in the right of that photo, for a new concrete driveway going in (about ~

We did pebbles early on at this house... nowhere near that much though. A

Wife saw some of their tools: 'Oh, these look cute! We should get them!' Yeah, sure. I already have three different battery configurations for power toys, why not throw another one into the mix. Why not! NO!!! Plus power tools aren't supposed to be 'cute'!

I’m generally more inclined to get mains power tools anyway, but for stuff that I do get cordless, it’s all gonna be the same brand/battery system (which happens to be Bosch 12v, but really the lesson is to pick one and stick to it). **** dealing with a dozen different chargers and batteries. It’s crazy how much cheaper cordless tools are when you buy them sans battery& charger too.

I’ve lost count of how many loads of gravel I’ve spread here, on the driveway, carport, paths etc. The aforementioned concrete driveway at least means I won’t have the first two to worry about redoing now!

A new fridge (with the obligatory mini-freezer, because non-commercial pure-fridges aren't available here) and a separate vertical freezer, to replace our ~8 year old side-by-side 2 door fridge/freezer that just **** the bed.

And for those wondering: the issue with the old one is at least the compressor (which only had 5 yr warranty, and is not one of the three parts they still make/sell for this model) and possibly also the circuit board, which had been co-opted by ants apparently, and also door seals, which are also not on the list of three parts they still make for this model.

Starlink.

Living in the sticks, as we do, means very limited options for broadband - basically a cellular hotspot or satellite internet. The existing satellite service (Hughesnet) is abysmal, and the cellular hotspot is adequate, but limited to 15GB of data per month before it throttles back.

Lack of broadband is one of the hidden costs of living in the country.

Last year (or was it the year before?) I signed up on Starlink's site to be notified when the service would be available in our area (southern Virginia). So recently I was pleased to receive an email saying that it's being deployed in our area, on a limited basis, first come, first served.

I immediately placed the $99 deposit; it's supposed to be here mid to late 2021. Fingers crossed.

When looking to move to the country just over a year ago, checking on broadband was one of our deciding factors. We rejected a number of properties on that alone. We are fairly close to the centre of our small village so not too bad here. Out in the lanes they are much worse off.

Was it everything you thought it would be?
I haven't fully tested them out. Going to do so this weekend.

One thing I discovered is that I can't get my Mac mini with Mojave to see them. It continually asks me to update my mini. So I ordered the audio cable to try that out with the AP Max.

Think I'll be able to give a brief idea on Monday.

My wife finally convinced me to replace my aging OG iPad Air, so I got a 4th gen and she purchased the Magic Keyboard for me. She said I needed to stop using her iPad Pro to play my Zombie Gunship game lol

Where in Va? I’d like to get rid of Hughesnet too. I’m in Mecklenburg County

Bought the Cheers DVD box set.

When holidaying in USA back in perhaps 2004 we travelled around the USA and Hawaii as part of our honeymoon. Whilst visiting Boston we went in the Bull & Finch pub, which is used for the exterior shots of the Cheers bar. They had also built a replica bar in a glass structure in the town centre, and I sat in Norms seat. I remember it feeling very strange having to carry my passport around to get in bars, even though we were both in our 30's....
