I've been wanting to pull the trigger on one of those for a while. I'd like to set it up as an off-road GPS navigator in the Jeep.

We'll expect a full review with lots of pictures. :)

Did they quote you a ship date?

Love to post my last purchase, unfortunately I ate it. I could take a pic of what it becomes later if you like :)

I think you have too much money. When you're finally purchasing actual dark wood hangers - you must have already bought everything else by now. Having nice hangers, honestly, has got to be the last thing I'll ever need. ;)

I've got a LOOOOONG way to go before I start investing in wood hangers. The 2 dollar 40 pack plastic hangers I think will be good until I'm at least married.

So whaddya say? Donate to the less-fortunate? :p

It's a matter of function and form really. A bic stick also serves it's purpose and yet I prefer to write with a Lamy 2000 fountain pen.

What exactly makes it a "poor" attempt? In my opinion they've made a very good job of something tough.
1.) It's only a tablet, not a normal laptop as well. Pretty much any other tablet PC on the market will have a centre screen joint & a full keyboard that allows it to function both as a normal laptop & as a tablet.
2.) It's too big. Why do you think that pretty much every other tablet PC on the market is a 12" non-wide or less?
3.) OS X was not designed for & has no underlying support for a touch input environment
4.) It's even more of a ripoff than the MacBook!

You would think that on a Mac forum people would understand form over function! Personally I use a rhodium-plated Caran d'Ache Ecridor Chevron fountain pen (£110/$220+ list). Fundamentally it performs the same purpose as a 19p ballpen, but if we all chose our belongings on function alone we would all own remarkably bland & borng stuff!

Quite true. It's difficult to explain the minor joy derived from aesthetically pleasing nuances, but it is there.

1.) It's only a tablet, not a normal laptop as well. Pretty much any other tablet PC on the market will have a centre screen joint & a full keyboard that allows it to function both as a normal laptop & as a tablet.

There are two types of "tablet PCs"... convertibles, like you refer to, and slates, like the Modbook (and others). Devices without keyboards are still fully funtional as a "normal computer" with a keyboard the pops up on the screen (think iPhone) or by writing your text input (and it auto-converts to typing). OS X already HAS very good handwriting recognition software native to it... and HAS for many versions.

2.) It's too big. Why do you think that pretty much every other tablet PC on the market is a 12" non-wide or less?

Too big for who? It depends on who your audience is. I'm an artist and wouldn't want a screen for drawing to be much smaller. I also happen to love the size of my current Macbook. Removing the flip-up screen and keyboard makes it that much more portible... for ME.

3.) OS X was not designed for & has no underlying support for a touch input environment

Wrong. Inkwell (handwriting recognition) is already part of OS X and has been for quite a long time.

And what makes you think Axitron (makers of the Modbook) didn't think out any deficiencies and provide the supporting software and drivers?

4.) It's even more of a ripoff than the MacBook!

It IS a Macbook. They take the Macbook and custom modify it.

You would think that on a Mac forum people would understand form over function! Personally I use a rhodium-plated Caran d'Ache Ecridor Chevron fountain pen (£110/$220+ list). Now that I agree it.

But you need to understand who the Modbook is really aimed at... it's meant for artists and designers (but probably also appeals to others who like slate-design tablets). Do you know how often I'm sketching an idea on a scrap piece of paper (when my laptop is never far from my side)? Do you know how many meetings I'm in where I need to block out a layout in ten seconds for my boss to visualize the idea? Do you know how it feels to be an artists caught between mediums (pencil/paper vs. computer)? Do you know how often I've wished my high resolution drawing tablet at my desk was a portable device I could take with me for sketching, or I could just lay back in bed and do photo retouching work with?

It may be a niche product, but that doesn't mean it's stupid because you think so.

Do you realise you could buy a real sat nav system for 1/8th the price? What the hell do you need a C2D computer just to run sat nav for?

It would also perform other laptop type tasks out side the vehicle. It wouldn't only be used as a nav tool.

This morning I purchased 2 things from Apple.com

* 60W Magsafe Adapter (so I can use it on the go and at school while the current one stays at home)

* AppleCare for iPhone (my original one-year warranty expires in September, so far no problems but you never know...)

ETA: I also pre-ordered Super Smash Bros. Brawl from Wal-Mart this morning for $19.82. They later bumped the price to $49.99 so I'm hoping that they honor the sales that were made before they caught their mistake.
