to replace my space heater
haha... no worries, the i7 Mini 2018 is a pretty good space heater too..
Just make sure you install Macfancontrol though.. because it can't properly handle 90/100c CPU temps, which it reaches fast with the default Fan settings.. I'm on my 4th replacement already and all of them had it.

Yea I don't get whats up with the fans not kicking up at all. Must be some lame Apple form over function thing.

This, but it's mostly Intel's fault really..

My wife still uses my old Mac mini 2012 i7, and it only reaches 25 degrees Celsius when idle and 60 while gaming. My 2018 Mini starts around 55/60 Celsius doing nothing! Even using safari will cause the temps to shoot up real quickly.

Sure, the 2018 Mini is around twice as fast, but it has 6 cores and a higher clock speed.. at the cost of temperatures.

That doesn't sound right. My wife has a 2018 Mini i3 and I never hear the fans go on. She mainly just uses Firefox.

That's the thing. The fans spin up quite late, but the temps are high.
Bare in mind the i3 is only quadcore without hyperthreading. That probably makes a difference too..

You're saying that the fans spin up with the computer at idle though.

I have 2014 and 2015 MacBook Pro 15s and you don't hear the fans unless you're running something significant. I can have several tabs open in Firefox and the fans will be quiet. They may or may not come on playing a full-screen YouTube video. They usually don't come on watching mp4 videos. This is a quad-core as well.

A six-core or eight-core shouldn't matter. The cores are turned on as needed.

The Mac mini 2018 has dekstop class CPUs. These are real 65 W CPUs, while the MacBooks have mobile CPUs, with a max. TDP ~ 50 W -> i7-4980HQ.

Yes, but they have a superior cooling system as well.

More CPU horsepower shouldn't generate more heat when the CPU horsepower isn't being used.

You have the base clock and it should be low enough so that you don't need to spin the fans to a noisy level while doing minimal work.

I have a Core i7-10700 which has 8 cores and it runs at 22-33 degrees normally.

I did not. Not sure where you read that.

I'm going to foot the bill on heat squarely on Apple. Yes the M1 Mini shows what ARM can do in terms of heat, but Apple could have kept the old original Mini casing or actually made better use of its fans like its competition.
I've worked on hundreds of Tiny/Micro PCs over the years and they all have one thing in common - fans that actually turn on.

My point being that the fans DON'T spin up at these high idle temperatures. That's why I suggested Macfancontrol to get the fans to spin up a little earlier.

I want a new desk. 1000wx600dx750h mm..

Solid minimal construction/no draws etc.. Wooden top >25mm thick. Black preferred. I will add under desk cable storage with power supply only needing to be hidden behind one leg.

Any suggestions UK Only Please - budget <£200 including delivery to Highlands of Scotland.

I have looked at IKEA etc. with no success so far.

Thank you.

Ohh this for my new M1 Mac mini setup.

New 2018 refurb MacMini 16GB, 1TB SSD (1 week old).. yes, skipping the Gen1 M1 chip. Replaces a 2012 8GB/1TB SSD MacMini. Same but faster with better ports. Love the Space Grey. Currently using a Dell UltraSharp 1440P and looking to upgrade to a 4K Dell UltraSharp or 34" Curved Wide..
What keyboard are you running? Looks like a Keychron? How do you like it and do you mind that the spacing between the CMD and the C (for copy etc) is a bit further away than on the regular Mac keyboards?
