Cables? What's a cable?

Decided to pull the desk off the wall, and swing it around. I also pulled out a hole saw and drilled four 2.5" holes into the table. I was then able to route all the wires into/under the table & out of sight.

Bookarc? .. I know, I know. I'll get to it. :D I think I'll be painting part of the room next. I got the pool table put together, so I'll be putting that into place, and adding the light fixture above the table. Hopefully pick up a new TV to put on the wall in the next month as well. The man cave will be ready by super bowl sunday. I hope .....

A little...spartan, no?

A beautiful setup, desk and room that is begging for a surge protector!

The wall plates are actually surge protected, these are installed in every outlet in my office..Not only do they offer surge protection but also allow you to swivel the outlet 360 deg. Whats nice is that they screw directly into the outlet making them very rigid and you cannot just pull it out of th wall.

Not following ya?

He thinks it might be a little too minimalistic or simplistic. Maybe a bit strained.

I, a minimalist, on the other hand love it. Looks very neat and clean. Wish I had such a uncluttered setup. Seems kinda roomy too :)

those are cool. Where did you find them and how hard are they to install?

Jessica did provide the exact link to the product. As for installation, if you can plug a cord into a wall outlet then you can install these. They just plug in after you remove the wall plate screw then the screw thats in this device just goes through both itself, the wallplate and then into the outlet making it very secure in the wall. For $15 it is well worth it. My house is pretty old and only having 3 outlets in this room I went from 6 sockets to 12 and I get the added bonus of no wires laying on the ground anywhere.

Nice minimalist setup, I love the clean look! I can certainly appreciate not having wires all over the place. I have a thing about visible wires...its a disease I think...or my wife is right and I'm just batty. Nice job!

You'd have to know the definition of spartan to follow what he said. May I suggest adding a dictionary to your setup? I'm sure it'll fit on your desk.

 Yes, because anyone who doesn't understand something someone else said obviously needs a dictionary constantly. I think that was just a little uncalled for.

All these very minimalist setups are nice.. but how on earth do you work like that?

Do you clear your stuff off your desk every time you're finished working?

I pretty much have my USB that connects to my camera hanging out of the back of my computer and around to the front constantly, because I plug it in so much, I don't wanna bother with it.

They must do. Often people just drop pens/notebooks/etc into drawers underneath I suppose.

I'm the same with my iPod Shuffle's dock. I sync it that many times for podcasts I just leave it lying around now :)

It takes no effort to keep things neat and tidy, don't try to make excuses... :D

In practice I sometimes do have a desk covered in junk but regularly I "press the reset button" and tidy stuff away and give my desk a good clean. It gets rid of unhealthy dust and debris and oftentimes you find stuff you thought you had lost! I hate feeling claustrophobic due to clutter and insist upon having legroom under the desk and arm room on the desk. I have my cables neatly tied away and have places for my iPhone and iPad to charge and dock.

Seriously, if anything sits on your desk, other than the computer and associated bits, for more than a couple of weeks then it probably doesn't need to be there. Bin it or file it away and give yourself some space. There is no point in having beautiful computer equipment hidden under a bunch of junk!

Unfortunately that's easier said than done for "the rest of us." For instance, I started repairing an iMac G5 with blown capacitors about two months back. I had the entire thing disassembled with parts all over one wing of my desk (I have a "U" desk), then life took over. There's really no place to move the thing to, there's screws laying around, I've put a towel down... it would just be a pain to move. Then on the other wings I have a drinking glass, docks for stuff, the printer, iPods, textbooks... stuff that I use often and there's really no better place for. (I would love to move the huge printer, since it's wireless, but unfortunately I use the faxing portion so near a phone jack it must remain.)

ditto - everything on my desk was (in a previous time) intended to be used, or has been used and i havent moved it.

I assure you I'm very much part of "the rest of us" as a father of three school kids and with a working wife. My day job is a Software Consultant for an IT company and my desk at work is also cleared daily. I also repair iPods and iBooks at home and sometimes have my soldering iron out with screws everywhere etc just like you. I repaired an LCD monitor with blown capacitors just a few weeks ago and my desk was cluttered at that time too. I'm currently in the middle of repairing a water damaged iPod Touch for my daughter. A little tip I will share is either to push the screws through some thin cardboard or paper to maintain their positions. Either that or loosely screw them back in to the holes they came from once disassembled.

I have a little leather mat for my drinking glass (that's allowed...) and I have a mousemat for my iPhone to sit on while charging. I don't have docks for my iPad and iPhone but to my mind that would be even neater than a mousemat and cable. Textbooks go on my bookshelf, there is no better place for books than a book shelf! I have an Canon MP560 inkjet printer with scanner on top and it sits on a separate little desk with drawers underneath.. It is also wireless so only needs a power socket. I only need to spin 90 degrees clockwise in my seat to use it.

Sorry, but none of your "excuses" wash with me because I've been there and done it. There is no shame in being untidy but my earlier post was to the person who seemed to be mocking the fact that some people are able to remain neat and tidy. Neither is right nor wrong, whatever you are most comfortable with is fine as it's your space. I just don't take anyone seriously who says that you can either be busy or tidy but not both. I for one can be busy, productive and tidy and my productivity is enhanced by being tidy. It never used to be that way for me, I used to be very untidy but I find that keeping things tidy also helps to keep my mind clear and focussed.

Try it for a few weeks and see how you get on.
Craig.
