Wait, you complain about the 5K being loud and noisy. Then you replaced it with a massive tower Mac Pro? The brand new iMac can hardly be louder than the Mac Pro? Or is it? My iMac is dead silent (although non-retina).

Well, as long as you're happy! :)

My 5K is dead quiet even under my "full throttle" which would consist of several tabs, music or movie playing and Lightroom? Never had an issue.

Sorry, I'm sure Lightroom is somewhat intensive, but my old CD MB would be able to have more than several tabs and a movie playing without even sweating.

How are you measuring this "full throttle" you speak of?

I don't know what others would consider full load. But for me on my MBPr it is running 5+ virtual machines for lab work, each VM given at least 2GB.

MY 2013 "2.5K" iMac is hilariously loud when going full throttle. It's at peak noise usually when exporting from Premiere Pro CC while working in After Effects during the export. It sounds like an RC helicopter hovering next to me!

I'm saying my full throttle, which his less intensive as some on here. I can throw anything at this for my uses and it won't humm a beat. Granted, I'm not running an external display with it or doing any programming while having all of this stuff open, so it just depends.

Here are my two setups. The cMP is my backup machine, just incase something happens to my nMP and it needs to go in for service (luckily, nothing like that yet (knock on wood)).

This is actually my new setup that I just finished putting together Monday. I got the desk from Craigslist for $10(!!) and it's huge (82"x36") and spacious. The left monitor is a Dell Ultrasharp 3008WFP display (30", 29" viewable), also new to me ($100 on CL). Right monitor is a Dell ST2421L that I got new about a year and a half ago. My keyboard is actually in mint condition, but I have a skin on it to protect it from dust, that's why it looks worn. The iPhone dock to the right (currently holding my iPod nano 7th Gen) is gonna be replaced shortly with it's Space Gray aluminum brother to match my 6s Plus coming on Friday. Not pictured: 2013 Mac Pro (behind monitor #2), iPhone 6 Plus, late-'11 13" MBP, Apple Watch 42mm SS-RSB.

This is my 4,1->5,1 oMP that I poured my blood, sweat and tears into restoring and upgrading. I found it as an almost empty shell (just the case, lobo and processor card) for $40 at an e-recycler, then built it from there. It's now complete, even with an official Apple power cord, and runs like a champ. Display is a 20" Cinema Display I got from the Marketplace on here for $20-$30 (I forget) and the keyboard and trackpad were given to me by a family member who got a new iMac and no longer needed these.

WOW, $20-$30 for the 20" Cinema Display is awesome. Those were great monitors.

Here's my setup. 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac Mini(2009) w/320 GB HD, Apple 20" Cinema Display, OWC External Hard Drive enclosure w/320 GB HD, Western Digital External HD w/500 GB HD. It's not the latest and greatest but it works for me and I love the look of the old style Cinema Display.

Arr, one of the VM servers my apps run on has about 25 VMs and even despite being a 2U dell rackmount it's usually really quiet. Some of those VMs are pretty busy too lol.

3.46 GHz was not a stock config, did you upgrade the CPUs or have a third party do the upgrade? How's the 970/980 performance in OS X?

Nice setup. What desk is that? Looks large and I'm looking for a large surface

Are they stable? Do you recall the Ikea series so I can take a look.
One of them was called the Jonas back in 2010, but I think they changed the name, the other one is just a custom one where they sell the top and the legs separate. In retrospect I would just buy two of the customs and but them together.
