love my g4s.

The Time Capsule is about as big as the 12" PowerBook!

I had an AirPort Extreme Base Station and I sold it because of it's bulk. Took up way too much space on my small desk. They do look awesome, though, and the Time Capsule is a very cool concept.

Yes! It is the best mouse; no contest!

Now if only they would update their drivers so control+scroll would activate magnification (I just use F13 and F15 now)...
You're lucky you get drivers at all! I have to mess around with evdev in my X config file to get all the buttons working.

I wasn't trying to be inflammatory before, I just don't really understand the logic of doing what you and the other poster have done, i.e. spend money to buy extra, inferior computers. Preference for the previous design is one thing, but I would personally find it highly frustrating to buy a computer, especially a desktop computer, and find that it is slower than my current laptop computer. Like you said though, to each his own.

Except that he already knows what he's getting into (i.e. slower speeds, etc). Having a computer isn't all about Gigahertz and RAM modules, it's about using the machine that is right for the job. The 12" powerbook is still the smallest, most portable notebook Apple has made, and the lampstand iMac is iconic to say the least. And with the amount of computing the average Apple user does (internet, email, music), a computer from several years ago does just as well as a contemporary one.

You can try and rationalize this to death, but at the end of the day it's an irrational decision. If you have a portable computer, it is irrational to buy an importable computer that is less powerful than the portable.

The 12" PowerBook may be an economical choice for someone who would travel with it more regularly than a MacBook Pro, but that's a different story.

To reiterate, I'm not attempting to be inflammatory. But I don't agree that it is objectively rational to buy an old and slow desktop computer when you have a newer and more powerful laptop. That is not to say that all decisions need to be objectively rational, or a critique. We're merely having a discussion about why people buy the computers they do.

not really, there are more reasons to buy a computer then power. For instance i was just previously about to buy a mac mini along with a mbp since i want to keep the macbook pro portable - i dont want to have hundreds of wires everywhere, so i was going to use the mac mini as my chat/irc/music/downloads etc and macbook pro for work - using synergy so that i can control both with the same mouse and keyboard...that way it keeps the desk clean, and it saves me from having to unplug the macbook pro cables all the time and means i can move it across the desk with relative ease. It also means that when i go into windows for gaming, i still have my email and music etc on display (and can control it again with synergy since its crossplatform). there are many reasons right there for why someone would want a second computer etc.

(i then decided to get a mac pro since i dont need portability right now, and if i did, id get the sony tz and put linux on).

It kinda defeats the purpose of buying a Time Capsule if you're going to stick it on a desk right next to the computer, doesn't it? Why not just buy an external hard drive for much less money?

That is where my Time Capsule lives, in a cupboard under the stairs and that's the beauty of wireless. You can hide all the ugly networking equipment away from sight.

yeah i figured the same thing - it is sexy, but with such a small space (since you got so much other stuff there) i would move it too. to be honest he probably will, you know what its like to get something new, just want to look at it all the time etc ;)

With this whole "buying old equipment" argument going on, I thought I would share an experience I have with my sister. Her and her husband are both Windows users and have been all their lives with their Toshiba notebooks. However, my sister has been wanting to get into Mac somehow and has asked me to look around for any good deals.

I think she wants to buy an older computer so she can just see how much she likes it. So, for that, I can understand buying something older. However, my wife and I, we have my 15" MBP and her 24" Alum. iMac, and I don't think we'll ever look back.

Why buy more than you need? If an older computer will do the job just as well, you don't need to get anything fancier.

Here's my current setup:

Thanks much - they're both 20" monitors - one Ultrasharp 2009WFP and one E207WFP (I much prefer the Ultrasharp… should replace the 207WFP with another 2009WFP).

It's the primary because it's the monitor on the right, and I'd be unable to use the side USB ports of the 2009WFP as easily if I switched the orientation of the monitors.

How did u get the dock on the external screen and how the 2 diff backgrounds.

go to system preferences-displays-arrangement, and drag the menu bar to the external. You also want mirroring unchecked, this will allow you to run two monitors separately, with different bgs. now if you go to back to desktop you'll be able to choose the image for each desktop.

i guess you're right, but my cable modem just happens to be near my desk and i didn't really have another place to put it. usually with my laptops, i'm somewhere else in the apartment and they get backed up without me having to wire them to a hd. plus, i got the tc used for really cheap. i also think it looks nice there.
